One of their three, almost forgotten albums (issued around a decade apart) - Music For Pleasure, Anything and Not of this Earth (I'm Alright Jack...and the Beanstalk). Of the three, it's the best by some distance. Plenty of favourable write-ups on Youtube, all these years after. I bought it back in the day and was pretty happy with it but the NME savaged it and the band and Rat and Brian ****ed off pretty soon after. It has aged better than a lot of stuff from that era (FFS, they are talented guys and Brian wrote most of it) and had Stiff not pushed them in to the studio too quickly with the wrong producer....Well, who knows? I've got a gatefold sleeve French pressing in my collection which is worth a few quid. Tellingly, despite all my positivity, the band don't refer to it too often although the odd track will turn up in live shows. Here it is warts and all...
I like the album, but before today had not listened to it all way through for a while. As is often the case with me I start my day listening 'on random' and when a track hits me like 'Don't cry wolf' did today i tend to post it here and then listen to that band or album. All four that I posted earlier came in to my conscience for today that way, then this afternoon I listened to Music for Pleasure and Strange Boutique - The Monochrome Set album which I used to love, but it has not aged as well, though its a still a good album.
40 years ago, and an anthem/benchmark was born. Like many boys of that time, I swear my hearing was irreparably damaged by pratty girls on the estate banshee screeching in an attempt to sing it, but with time comes a more objective appraisal ...
Loved that song I must be getting old but it sounds a lot better than the so called music my 3 daughters listen to nowadays
Been listening to the clash today some fantastic songs they made but my favourite was white man in Hammersmith palais ..a great tune .no I'm not being racist just loved the song when I was growing up.
More 1979 goodness (God what a year to become musically enabled) . The dancing, though not essential, would be advantageous ... I know Into the valley is the anthem, but I loved this more for the : 1. metronomic synth beat 2. guitar work giving us 4 years advance notice of Big Country
That was the one that "called" to brethren in N18 far more than anything in the entire Punk catalogue ever could, or ever will. For me, you merely change the lyrics to : Midnight to 6am, "blues party" sound from Jamaica. Slim Smith, Jimmy Cliff, Delroy Wilson - the cool operator. and you have being a kid in early 70s N18.
A stunningly great song, both musically and lyrically brilliant. It was possibly the band's favourite. Joe Strummer said that it was a real highlight of his work... I remember Mick Jones recalling being in a pub 'Up North' having a drink, about 20 years ago, and that someone started singing it. The whole place just joined in and they sang the whole thing. He likened it to a congregation singing a hymn. That is something that I would have like to have seen.
The Buzzcocks/Skids/Penetration gig is just over a couple of weeks away. Very excited to see a decent act perform this properly... ...and not this poor imitation...
It's all personal choice. My youngest loves Green Day and I can listen to them but I'm not having U2 at any price and I have loved the original nearly my whole life. When I hear that version, I hear this... ...and god forgive me, this... Arrrrrrrrggggghhhhhhh!
