"Why is everyone so sceptical of the 1b figure?" Because it represents a statement of POTENTIAL (new WHL, on-pitch success) , not current reality. The baseline value (assets etc) for THFC seems to be at least 300m. So I would expect a sensible takeover bid to offer between 350-500m.
£1 billion is a bargain for a club like Spurs. We have the glamour, the history, and we have London. Plus - and never underestimate what I am about to say - we have the ability to stoke the vanity of those wealthy enough to buy us. Think about that for a minute. Part of the fun for the Arabs who bought £ity was in knocking United off their perch and in mocking Fergie, making him look like a fool. I'm sure that played a major part in Fergie retiring when he did, because he knew that the upstarts down the road had called-in his number. No way can United now compete with £ity, and they are destined to remain the poorer cousins for at least the next decade. What would have been the fun for the Arabs in buying United (even if it had been up for sale, which it wasn't)? Much better to take a mid-table side (like City were) and turn it into "£ity" - a side far, far better and bigger than United. The Arabs would have been massaging one another's cocks, such would have been pleasure and pride in turning a once-crap club into a world-beating powerhouse. Now, let's look at a billionaire coming in and trying to muscle his way into the London football market. Even if either Arsenal or Chavs were up for sale (which neither is), where would be the glory for any vain Arab, Russian or Chinese billionaire in buying either of those two clubs? Much better to take lowly Spurs and turn it into a £ity-style powerhouse, since the glory in winning titles and grinding the names of "Arsenal" and Chelski" into the mud would be rendered so much more delicious! To a wealthy, vain man, £1 billion is cheap at twice the price. Trust me.
R A done that to us with Chelski, who were up and down between the old 1st and 2nd Division, like a fiddlers elbow, just because we wouldn't let him buy Spurs
With football, a clubs solid assets are only part of the picture. Don't forget Sky and BT have just paid the Premier League £3BILLION for 3 years worth(?) of TV rights, there's loads of other merchandising streams available to clubs as well as the usual assets. The land Tottenham own alone is tempting. Sure, it is worth money in the sense that **** loads of houses could be built on it even they the likelyhood of it happening is remote. But it's still a nice safety net for any investor. Also, something is only worth what someone is prepared to pay. What anybody else thinks is pretty irrelevant (as long as the money is there). A price of £1billion would certainly suggest that any buyer will be in for the long-haul and not after a quick buck.
Crock of **** post hiag. Only got to the word bargain but definitely a contender for tye worst post in internet history.
A club's listed value will tend to differ more from its sales price than it would if it were simply another generally available commodity. If I want to buy a Hyundai Elantra and the dealership wants to charge me 50% more than its listed price, I would go to another dealership. But if it were the only Elantra in the world, I wouldn't have that option. And if, for whatever reason, I really wanted it, I would pay the extra money. Like any other club, Spurs are a one-of-a-kind item. Of course, all I really know is rumor and gossip, but see http://cartilagefreecaptain.sbnatio...215/tottenham-hotspur-sale-ownership-cain-hoy The group that has been formed to consider making a bid seems formed expressly to make a bid for Spurs. I don't think I need to add that Joe Lewis, Daniel Levy and ENIC are rather unlikely to do anything other than jack the price up as high as possible, and that they aren't the worst people in the world at that game. I wish a small fraction of posts were half this funny. But it takes all kinds, I guess.
I like hiag. His work on the scouse, goon and chelsea boards dont go unnoticed. United is just a step to far for him. Hes like londons only in that respect.
"If you have a sense of humour it's a decent read actually." Another meticulously researched factual article by HIAG. You can see why the weaker-minded like UnitedInRed are so confused by it.
Apparently we are a step closer to American ownership, not a bad thing in my view. Think of all those mini skirted dancing girls in their boots and hats and pom poms.
