A sixteen minute silent film showing what Spurn Point looked like in 1956... http://www.yorkshirefilmarchive.com/film/humber-highway
Great piece of film, thanks. Amazing how apart from all the old nissan huts and other buildings, the road down to the point still looks the same. Surprising as we know the whole peninsular has been moving south east as it is constantly swept away on one side and remade on the other. The footage of Hepworth's at Paull was interesting too. Almost Victorian the way they were hand forging those frames. I am sure there would have been powered rollers by 1956. The pride evident in the high tech "automatic" oxy-acetylene burner was amusing. It was automated by running via an electric motor on a straight track. By the time I worked at Dunstone's in the early seventies, they had machines that cut any profile directly from the drawing offices 1/10 scale plans. Now I suppose they will be CNC'ed straight from a computer and never even physically drawn or marked out at all. Pity there was no footage of Paull Fort. I would have liked to have seen how it was back then. We used to cycle out there as kids in the 60's and it was an incredible place. A time warp from WW2. Another highlight of our trips to Paull was to go for a bag of crisps from the Humber Tavern which then had the front room as a sort of cafe come shop. We would then use the toilets and put plenty of bog roll down. The trick then was to flush and run outside to the river wall as quick as possible to see the discharge into the river. No play stations then. We had to make our own entertainment. Agreed, I'm surprised they turned it down. The decision is going to be appealed, but the planning committee unanimously rejected it, so it's not going to be easy.
