don't understand WTF, Sarri persists with Alvaro??

Did anyone see the gaping miss this weekend from Morata???

Giroud was doing a job & Sarri tinkers with it needlessly.

Defense always win championships.. Even if we play prime Drogba & Diego cannot go with Alonso & Luiz as defenders FFS!!

Woke up early to watch this (in states for holiday).

We played pretty horrendously. Probably incorrect free kick and we are one down.

A very soft 2nd goal. Midfield non existent and the spurs boys running through time and time again. Kovacic showed a lot of fight but he needs to learn when to press as the whole midfield and defence was too deep and no one could keep up with his energy. He made a few good tackles high up the pitch only for morata to mess things up.

Really need to start giroud over morata as hes a lost cause. Again kept getting caught offside and no idea why sarri plays him as hes so lightweight.

Pedro and barkley need to start more.

Luiz had quite a few brain farts, hes most ar fault for that son goal.

Still though first loss and sarris first season .Will give him a long time to get us up to what he wants us to do

Had a couple of things not go our way, especially the pen on Hazard but we were still absolutely horrendous and didn’t deserve anything.

3 completely avoidable goals, should save the first and second one even though Luiz moves out the way and that third goal is embarrassing, it was that straight forward I’d have stopped it....

Seems like when a team mark Jorginho we struggle so Sarri might need a plan B. Interesting to see if Luiz starts the next league game too, he was the worst on the pitch by a mile today.

Have a tendency of late to be a bit lightweight in these fixtures not surprising when the international fixtures interrupts any meaningful continuity; disappointing to lose to the Spuds in such a lame fashion but I guess it gives Sarri food for thought on future changes.

No doubt where our problems lie, right in our heart at midfield. Today mids were just dreadful, wiped away by direct speed and guile.
Why is the worlds best defensive midfielder not playing defensive midfield???? That might at least give the back 4 some relief from the waves of attackers hammering our goal all day long. Jorghino seems to have been found out lately, neutralised and given the run around by our last 3 opponents. Kovacic was one out today in trying to get forward while Kante was again left wandering in the desert. Barkley is not the complete answer, but he does have some go in him. Skill with power is what we need to find.
We are SOooooooooo predictable, with our only goal threat coming from the midget twins Hazard and Willian who predictably, ran into a scrum of defenders every time they approached the goal. This is because nothing is coming to them from the midfield. Hazard should have got a penalty, but that was about it.
Morata is somewhere in the Derbyshire Peaks, far beyond Hope. Sell, sell, sell !!
The quick and positive Sarri ball of a month or so back is turning into a ponderously slow game of sideways and backwards passing with little attempt to break forward quickly and attack in numbers.Yesterday was indistinguishable from the way we played under Conte late last season.
Spurs, by comparison were direct, fast, accurate and cohesive. Looks like there are more than 2 Teams above us that Sarri thinks we are "far behind"
This has been coming for the last few games, and is a big reality check, which Sarri needs to jump on.
So it's almost back to square one, except we now know what doesn't work for us in the PL.
Maybe time to inject some enthusiasm, pace and power into this sluggish 1st eleven, be that a change of players, a change of formation, or preferably, both.
    Back to work.

    Cant disagree with that.

We need a more attacking midfield and or, more width from an actual winger. You are spot on that it looked like us from yesteryear. Hazard drifting inside. Willian inside, headless and cannot play back to goal. Kante does look lost but we need to play giroud. Everything slows or breaks down with morata whether its him losing it, holding on to long, falling over or going offside.

With giroud though we need pedro and rlc/barkley. People who will run past and go ahead of him as willian will never do that

A very incorrect free kick. Banjo was throwing himself to the floor every time a Chelsea player was within tackling distance. Talk about embarrassing.

That's true, can't blame the ref for the loss, but he gave us nothing all game. Thought there were plenty of so -so tackles that went in with not even a free kick.
Booking for Alonso was laughable as well.
Spurs murdered us though, all their players looked quicker , classier and knew how to run into open spaces, so one pass repeatedly had someone in behind us. They played very well as a unit. We were clueless by comparison.
Looks to me as if the collective thought is that only Jorghino will make the telling passes ,and only Hazard or Willian are to go for goal, the rest simply pass it on then hang back.

    What an utter mess.

Spurs got the tactics spot on but we were far too slow to react and try something different. The subs late in the game seemed chaotic.

Personally I think it was gagging for Jorginho off, Kante in DM and then Barkley or Fabregas in attacking midfield. Giroud as well in place of the off side master.

Worst performance for a long time but Spurs deserve credit. They are a team that has been together a while now and we haven't. It showed.

Every revolution will have set backs. Lets hope we recover quickly.

I don't want to be too reactionary but there are some concerns that's for sure: -

    - That our high passing and possession stats aren't translating into enough chances/goals
    - The Jorginho / Kante at the midfield base conundrum
    - Luiz looking like the brain fart version of himself more each week
    - That Morato seems incapable of staying onside or on his feet

Those are pretty much the kinks in our team as I see them too.
We need to give Sarri another season after this at least, to see what he can build.
I will be more than happy with a top 4 spot this season tbh. I wasn't expecting us to win the title

exactly. Top 4 is the aim and hopefully a cup.

Sarri has a very specific way of playing that requires specific personnel and it will take more than the few weeks he had pre season to sort out.

Exactly, and he has had only one transfer window. It would be monumentally spasticated to expect him to be able to bring in the perfect personnel for his style in one window.
He has shown enough promise to give him time.
Guardiola had a pretty lacklustre first season at City, until he was allowed to buy the players he wanted and was given time, now they're flying.
Saying we should sack him after one loss in 20 games <doh>

Stan is the epitome of what is wrong with the modern day arm chair fan.

He's picked a successful team to follow and can't cope when we don't win every weak 3-0.

Calling for the manager to be sacked after one bad result is utter lunacy. Stan should buy a ticket, go watch a game in the MH lower stand and call for Sarri to be sacked and see where that gets him.....<whistle>

That was my season area, he would have been decapitated.

You have it dead right. Sarri has already transformed the team, but the 1st eleven are looking as if there might not be much more improvement in them playing his style.
Perhaps Sarri might loosen up a bit and think about a different formation by shuffling some players a little, or hopefully try some younger blood for a few games to see if the first 11 is really the best 11. Just tweaking, not huge changes.
Tough to do that AND stay in top 4,
January is likely to see Sarri address our weaknesses and update the squad with the quality types he needs to take us up the next rung of the ladder.
Have to admit though, it's heaps better than last year.
