Danny Cowley’s side kickstarted the 2021/22 campaign with a 1-0 victory over Fleetwood Town last Saturday. However, he’s since stated that he’s eager to see the squad at Fratton Park evolve still ahead of deadline day at the end of August. Football League World understand that Pompey are amongst the clubs interested in landing a deal for Azeez from Arsenal. However, there are a number of other, unnamed, clubs also interested in striking an agreement with the Premier League side. Azeez, 18, has managed just one senior outing under Mikel Arteta, stepping off the bench in the Europa League clash with Dundalk last season as the Gunners closed out a 4-2 victory. The central midfielder has, though, excelled through the Arsenal ranks in both the U18s and U23s. Last year, he featured on 15 occasions in the Premier League 2 Division 1 for Arsenal, scoring once and registering a further two assists. The Gunners’ young side finished 10th in the table.

The news comes off the back of teenage keeper Toby Steward recently taking part in an England goalkeeper’s development camp. Professional development phase coach Liam Daish said: “It’s nice to see some of our players are getting the recognition they deserve. “Opportunities have opened up for Toby and Harry, and they’ve been able to grab them with both hands. “It’s great to see them gain international experience and that’s something that can only benefit them in the future.”

DANNY COWLEY IDENTIFIES 23-YEAR-OLD AS PORTSMOUTH TRANSFER TARGET. please log in to view this image Portsmouth are interested in a loan move for Jordan Shipley in the final six days of the transfer window, according to Portsmouth.co.uk. The versatile 6' tall midfielder scored three goals as Coventry City successfully consolidated their second tier status last season, however with fierce competition for places at the Coventry Building Society Arena, first team opportunities look limited. The 23-year-old would add a point of difference to Danny Cowley’s midfield contingent predominantly made up of more defensive minded players. Shipley would bring experience of promotion from League One which he earned with the Sky Blues in 2019/20 and the versatility to cover more than one base in midfield. Shipley has scored eight times and assisted seven in 65 games at third tier level, not a bad return from midfield, however it is his energy that sets him apart from other midfielders. Equally as effective out of possession with the intensity of his counter-pressing and appetite to do defensive work for the team.

The 24-year-old right-back has played 48 times for Pompey since arriving from Accrington last September. He has featured twice this term, including a late cameo appearance at Highbury Stadium on the opening day. Johnson has recently returned from a three-match ban after being controversially sent off against Millwall in the Carabao Cup.
I for one am very sorry to see him go. So consistent and reliable. Freeman has done well but I am not fully convinced he is a better player week in week out. Perhaps Callum was earning too much money!
Portsmouth eyeing loan move for Millwall defender ahead of deadline day. Millwall’s Mahlon Romeo has today emerged as a defensive option for Pompey. please log in to view this image Mahlon Romeo (on the right) Danny Cowley is keen to explore a loan opportunity for the Championship right-back before the close of the transfer window on Tuesday night. Romeo has been earmarked as a potential replacement for Callum Johnson at the back, following his loan departure for Fleetwood Town yesterday. Interestingly, Cowley is in the market for a right-sided defender who can play centre-back. That is proving tougher than anticipated, however, with 5' 10"Romeo primarily a right-back, although he did fill in centrally in a back three for Millwall last season. The Londoner has picked up a stack of Championship experience after signing for the Lions from Gillingham in 2015, making 221 outings in all competitions. Pompey are closing in on a deal for Miguel Azeez with Cowley is also in the market for a striker.

The 25-year-old right-back appeared against the Blues in a Carabao Cup tie at The Den earlier this month. Blues boss Danny Cowley said: “It’s a deal that we thought was impossible at the weekend and we have to thank Millwall and Mahlon for making it happen. “He’s a boy who will bring us a great deal of athleticism and he’s versatile, with the ability to play on either side of the pitch. “Mahlon is also incredibly dynamic and I think our supporters will love his all-action displays. It’s a brilliant signing for us. “He’s another player who has not just played in the Championship, but also thrived at that level for a sustained period.”
Portsmouth Academy coach appointed new Fratton Park kitman - after coaching career at Bristol Rovers, Oxford United, Wimbledon, Torquay and Eastleigh. Kev McCormack’s role as Pompey kitman has been filled – by a long-serving Academy coach. Shaun North has totalled more than two decades of sterling service with the Blues’ youth set-up. During two lengthy spells, he has been instrumental in the development of the likes of Gary O’Neil, Matt Ritchie, Joel Ward, Asmir Begovic, Ben Close, Conor Chaplin and Jack Whatmough. Now the 59-year-old has stepped away from Academy coaching duties to become only Pompey’s third kitman in more than half a century. In July, McCormack revealed he was to relinquish the role after 22 years to spend more time with wife Sarah, who last year was diagnosed with bowel cancer. However, the popular Welshman continues to remain at Fratton Park as assistant kitman, albeit keeping him out of match-day duties but remaining at the training ground.

De Havilland, who is 20-years-old, was released by Fulham at the end of last season. He has been a free agent for the past couple of months and will be weighing up his next move in the game. Pompey have him in on trial and the youngster will be eager to impress the League One side to earn himself a contract. ‘Really good footballer’… Their boss, Danny Cowley, has said: “Ryan De Havilland is here. Ryan has been here for a lot of pre-season. He’s a great kid, very technical and a really good footballer. He’s a lovely footballer and he makes training better every day. “He’s between clubs, so he’s helping us and we’re helping him. It works for us both.” De Havilland was on the books at Reading as a youngster before switching to Fulham. He went on to make three first-team appearances for the Cottagers before they opted to release him, all of which came in the EFL Trophy. The midfielder was a regular for their Under-18s side before making the step up to the Under-23s. De Havilland made a total of 25 appearances in the Premier League 2, chipping in with two goals and two assists altogether.

The West Ham youth product has put pen to paper on a one-year deal, with the club option of a further 12 months. He had been on trial at Fratton Park over the summer after leaving Charlton at the end of last season. Blues boss Danny Cowley said: “Jay came in and really impressed us with his energy, power and athleticism. “Unfortunately he picked up an injury and we’ve been working hard with him on his rehab. Now that he’s back fit, we’ve decided to sign him. “It gives us a good group of talented young professionals, along with Haji Mnoga, Liam Vincent and Jayden Reid. “The plan is for Jay to go out somewhere and play regular games. This, accompanied with a good training programme, will hopefully see him develop as we hope.” Mingi made two senior appearances for Charlton, featuring in Papa John’s Trophy games against Brighton U21s and Leyton Orient.
