Former Pompey youngster Josh Flint's career takes him to Holland.

please log in to view this image

The Waterlooville born lad featured for FC Volendam on Saturday ahead of the upcoming season. Flint is on trial with the Dutch second-tier side's reserves and featured in a goalless draw against OFC Oostzaan on Saturday.

Flint was released from Fratton Park in January after coming through the Blues' youth ranks. After his Pompey departure, Flint had a trial with League Two outfit Walsall before joining Bogor on a permanent basis.

However, the 19-year-old is now in the Netherlands, taking the same trajectory as his former Pompey team-mate Leon Maloney.

The former Crookhorn College pupil made two Leasing.com Trophy appearances for his boyhood club, scoring on debut in a 3-1 win over Norwich under-21s.

Portsmouth linked with swoop for exciting 18-y/o prospect

please log in to view this image

Portsmouth have been linked with a move for an 18-y/o left-back from Scotland as they step up their recruitment with the new season imminent, as reported by the Ross-Shire Journal.

Kenny Jackett has been restricted somewhat in the transfer market due to his current squad size, but Ross County defender Josh Reid wouldn’t count towards the senior squad quota, given his tender age. He’s appeared five times for Ross County in the SPFL and is rated as an exciting prospect by the management at Victoria Park.

Reid has been with The Staggies for ten years and has burst onto the scene this season. The SPFL is already five games into the latest campaign, with Ross County currently third. His performances were praised by manager Stuart Kettlewell recently: “I had hoped Josh was going to perform to the level he has done and I’ve been delighted with him,” he said.

“I’ll probably sound as if I’m heaping loads of pressure on him, but there has to be an element of pressure that comes with it for young players. If we believe in them, they have to believe in themselves. The demands will only increase for Josh.”

The report suggests Kenny Jackett could see the youngster as a viable first-team option, not simply a hot prospect, and that Pompey have already been on two scouting missions to see him in action.

Signing Reid for an immediate first-team place would be a gamble, but with limits on the number of players you can have over the age of 22 in your squad, it is a clever tactic by Pompey. If they find young talent that could hold it with the senior professionals, then they’re essentially getting a ‘free hit’ in terms of the numbers.

The previous Pompey model has seen early 20-something players being plucked from non-league (Hawkins, Lowe, Hackett-Fairchild), but there will be less scope for such projects under the salary cap initiative. That means adapting and by targetting Reid, Pompey are demonstrating their ability to adapt.

Former Pompey winger Jamal Lowe has just joined Swansea City from Wigan Athletic for £800,000. An absolute bargain seeing as we sold him to Wigan a year ago for £2.5 million ! However, the good news is that Wigan can now pay us the balance they still owe us of £750,000. A bit of money at last !!

Portsmouth set sights on signing 24-yr-old who quit Tottenham last year.

Portsmouth have set their sights on signing 6' tall defender Connor Ogilvie from Gillingham this summer, Football Insider understands.

The 24-year-old left Premier League giants Tottenham to join the Gills last summer after his rise through the youth ranks in north London.

A source at Fratton Park has told Football Insider that Pompey are keen on snapping up the versatile left-back or centre-half from their League One rivals and have lined up a move ahead of the start of the new season.

Despite having only left Tottenham last summer, Ogilvie already has over 100 games of League One experience under his belt after he spent two seasons on loan at Gillingham before he joined the club permanently.

A former England under-17 international, the full-back never played for Spurs’ senior side, although he did feature as an unused substitute in a Europa League knock-out clash against Benfica in Portugal back in 2014.

The Essex-born talent demonstrated his versatility as a defender last season as he started the campaign playing at centre-back before he moved back to the left-hand side.

He started all but two of the club’s league games as the Gills finished 10th in the table – five places and nine points behind his new suitors Portsmouth.

Pompey boss Kenny Jackett is looking to bolster his options in defence after centre-back Christian Burgess and left-back Brandon Haustrup left the club on free transfers this summer.

Apparently Pompey are also looking at 6' striker Brandon Hanlan aged 23, again from Gillingham, as his contract ran out end of last season. He is a former Charlton Athletic youngster.

Cameron Pring Signs For Pompey - Blues bring in Bristol City left-back on loan.

please log in to view this image

Pompey have signed left-back Cameron Pring on a season-long loan deal from Bristol City.

The 22-year-old will wear the number 23 shirt during his time at Fratton Park after arriving from the Championship outfit.

Blues boss Kenny Jackett said: “We needed another specialist left-back because after Lee Brown, we don’t have another experienced player in that position.

“Cameron’s an up-and-coming, talented footballer, who I feel can do a really good job for us this season.

“He’s particularly strong going forward and I believe he would link up well with Ronan Curtis on that side of the pitch.

“Rather than just sitting around at Bristol City, he’s been out on a lot of loans and that’s helped him develop.

“He went out and played at Walsall last season and after a year in League Two, I feel he’s ready for League One.

“Cameron actually appeared against us in the EFL Trophy back in January and is someone who we’ve been following for a while, so we’re delighted to sign him.”

Pring began his career in the academy of hometown club Cheltenham before moving to Ashton Gate in the summer of 2016.

He had temporary spells with non-league sides Guernsey, Merthyr, Aldershot and Hereford, then had a stint with Newport.

Pring returned to Cheltenham for the second half of the 2018/19 season and spent the entirety of the last campaign with Walsall, where he made 24 appearances.

I looked at Pompey's squad for the game against Stevenage, and the thought struck me that it is nowhere near good or strong enough for a sustained promotion push. I keep thinking that Hesketh would be a good addition to the midfield. Other than that a CB and a creative forward/midfielder come to mind.

Adam May: Cambridge United sign midfielder following Portsmouth exit.

Cambridge United have signed midfielder Adam May on a one-year contract following his exit from Portsmouth.

The 22-year-old joins the League Two side as a free agent having left Pompey at the end of his contract.

May, whose deal includes an option for another 12 months, played 13 games on loan with Swindon Town last season and also had a spell with Boreham Wood.

U's head coach Mark Bonner said it was important to strengthen in midfield and that May is an "excellent fit".

"Adam brings a different type of creative skillset than the competition for those places. He arrives at a good age, with plenty to prove but also with the potential to play at a higher level."

Brett Pitman: Swindon sign former Portsmouth and Bournemouth striker.

Swindon Town have signed striker Brett Pitman on a one-year deal.

The 32-year-old was a free agent after leaving Portsmouth at the end of last season.

Pitman, who has also had spells with Bournemouth, Bristol City and Ipswich, has scored 166 goals in 489 league appearances.

"It's exciting to join a club that got promoted last season and that will be going in the right direction," he told the club website.

Pompey have reportedly enquired about taking 24 year old attacking midfielder Sammie Szmodics on loan from Bristol City.
Keen to make deal happen, but interest from Championship clubs could make it tricky.
Jackett wants someone to fill the No 10 role, and sees Szmodics as perfect fit. He was on loan to Peterborough Utd last season, scoring 4 goals in 10 matches, and apparently they want to resign him, and Sunderland are also after him.

Reported Preston North End target Callum Johnson of Accrington Stanley, to sign for Portsmouth - reports.

His name has been banded around plenty of times in recent weeks but Callum Johnson will not be signing for Preston North End this summer, LancsLive understands. PNE have been linked with the defender before, in the January transfer window last year.

Now, the 23-year-old - according to journalist Alan Nixon - is on his way to League One side Portsmouth. Johnson is believed to command a £200k fee, a figure that is in Pompey's price range.

Right back Johnson has been one of Stanley’s stand-out players since arriving from Middlesbrough in 2017.

Joining initially on loan before making his switch permanent, the 23-year-old helped Accy to the League Two title in 2018. And Johnson has been key in the past two seasons as John Coleman’s side retained their third-tier status.

He can also play at centre half, and in central midfield. In total, he’s made 119 appearances, scoring one goal.

Pompey have signed Callum Johnson from fellow League One side Accrington for an undisclosed fee.

The 23-year-old right-back – who has been handed the number two shirt – has penned a two-year deal, with the club holding an option for a further 12 months.

Blues boss Kenny Jackett said: “He’s someone who we’ve been tracking for a while now and we’re delighted to add him to our defensive options.

“Callum is only young, but has already gained a lot of experience over the past few years at Accrington.

“We do feel that it’s the right time for him to come here and take up the challenge of playing for Pompey.”

Johnson progressed through the academy at Middlesbrough and joined Accrington – initially on loan – in the summer of 2017.

The versatile defender can play anywhere across the back four and has also featured in the centre of midfield.

He made a total of 119 appearances during his time with Stanley, scoring his only goal in a 2018 victory over Forest Green.

Portsmouth are reportedly keen on signing Stoke City defender Harry Souttar ahead of the new season, according to the Portsmouth News.

21 year old Souttar spent last year’s campaign on loan with League One side Fleetwood Town, and caught the eye with a number of impressive performances.

The 6' 6" central defender made 41 appearances in total for the Fishermen, as they finished sixth in the third-tier standings, before being beaten by Wycombe Wanderers in their play-off semi-final.

It remains to be seen as to whether Stoke City will be willing to loan him out for another season though, as it appears as though his strong performances haven’t gone unnoticed with the Championship side.

The Potters finished 15th in the second-tier standings last term, and could be looking at using him in their squad ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.

Born in Scotland, he is a full Australian international, so far scoring 4 goals in 2 senior appearances !

Southern League Premier Division South club Gosport Borough have signed former Portsmouth central defender Matt Casey.

Boss Shaun Gale is delighted to have captured the 6’8” defender, who made three appearances in the EFL Trophy for the Fratton Park outfit before being released in the summer.

The 20-year-old Southampton-born Casey had a spell on loan at Privett Park in 2018/19, making 13 appearances, but his progress was hampered by a broken collar bone.

He also had temporary spells away at Weymouth, Basingstoke Town, Havant & Waterlooville and Bognor Regis Town.

Gale told https://www.gosportboroughfc.co.uk: “Matt’s been training with us throughout pre-season. He is at the stage in his career where he needs to play regular men’s football. I’m chuffed to get him in. He’s a great lad and will certainly give us a big presence.

“I think that me and my assistant Scott Green, who knew him as a kid at Pompey, can improve him and make him the player he can be.

“We’ve got a good mix here of young players and experienced ones and Matt is a terrific addition which includes the likes of Aaron McCreadie, Joe Lea and Pat Suraci. Don’t forget Bradley Tarbuck is still young too.

PORTSMOUTH AND SHREWSBURY TOWN INTERESTED IN AUSTRALIAN A-LEAGUE DEFENDER

Portsmouth and Shrewsbury Town are interested in Newcastle Jets defender Matthew Millar, according to a report by The World Game.

The League One duo could lure the versatile 24-year-old to England in preparation for the new season.

Millar joined Newcastle Jets in February last year and has since impressed for the A-League side. He is currently a teammate of ex-Cardiff City and Crystal Palace midfielder Joe Ledley and former Sunderland forward Roy O’Donovan.

The 6' 1" defender, who is also compatible in midfield, has also previously played for the likes of Melbourne City, South Melbourne and Central Coast Mariners.

He is open to a move to the UK and has said, as per The World Game: “The sort of style that’s prevalent in England – the big body, athletic, physical sort of game really matches up well with my characteristics and how I sort of play,” he said.

“I’m really excited to play with the Jets but it’s been a big dream to play over in England, so if an opportunity comes knocking I’m sure the Newcastle Jets would be a bit disappointed but happy to let me go.”

He added: “They’ve been a great club so far. Even if something happens they’ll always hold a special place in my footballing journey.”

Pompey and Shrewsbury are both gearing up for the upcoming League One season and kick-start the new campaign against each other at Fratton Park tomorrow.

They could both now battle it out to lure Millar to England, with the Australian linked with a switch to the third tier.

He is a right back, or right sided midfielder. Surely, what we need is a central defender ! <doh>
