Last I read average was about £65k with the top ones on about £100,000. By contrast the top union player, Maro Itoje is on £800,000 and Owen Farrell on £750,000. They both play for Saracens and how they afford that with their gates is a mystery. Just under 9,000. Though the average attendance at Union Premiership games is higher than at the Superleague games. Itoje was offered £200,000 more by a French club last season.
I was listening to Chris Evans this morning and his show is sponsored by Cinch. All England players were given a Land Rover Discovery or something, but one of the playersI think it was Ben Youngs drives a Bentley Beantayga.... Cinch pick up all parking tickets etc ....
Surprising how many union teams get higher averages than the top RL ones, Bristol, Leicester, Bath, Gloucester… Wasps were averaging 4,000 more than FC but went under. With the wages some are on and television rights not that great. there could be trouble ahead…
Top earners between £150k and £180k, most on around £80k with the squaddies anywhere from £40k to £60k. Academy graduate generally start at around £30k. The rules around the cap have become a lot stricter now, back in the day there were some earning much more via their wife who was listed as a cleaner!
It is absolutely crazy how much sponsorship Union gains compared to league. One of my best mates left League to play for Wales in Union and was thrown straight into the world cup squad. He said that when he went to the hotel they had to go out to a marquee and as he walked round he was told to speak to all the sponsors lined up in there like a trade show. He was given a TV, designer clothing, a car, god knows what else. All taken on order and delivered to him soon after. To put it into context when he played for Great Britain Rugby League they were given a Gillette shower bag with some shaving foam, shower gel and moisturiser in it!! It does make me wonder what the England Football players get when they are in camp or ahead of a tournament.
There were coaches on £5000 at a championship club and their company paid a lot more for supplying some equipment....alegedly
Sport is crazy. Remember one tennis player years ago saying when he started out he had to beg borrow and steal rackets and play with crap ones. Now when he had won grand slams and was worth a lot of money and could afford anything firms were queueing up to offer him their equipment and pay him a lot of money to use it.
I'm constantly amazed at how much stubbornness borne out of nostalgia can halt progress which is so clearly beneficial. Cutting off the nose to spite the face..
I don't have a problem with moving the fair. Finding a new location where the local residents don't mind people ****ting in their gardens will be the sticking point.
