If the almost inevitable happens, there will of course be great anger and heartbreak from the fan base. That is understandable, and we’ll all feel both to varying degrees. However, those of us who have seen it all before, some of us three times, know it’s not the end of life as we know it.
1974 was grim, but look what happened in the following 10 years, with a great manager and a fairly generous board backing him with some astute transfers. If the board had given just a tiny bit more, we could have sealed our place in history.
2005 was awful, and things didn’t really get much better until:
2009, the club on the brink of extinction until an Italian banker and a Swiss billionaire industrialist saved us, leading to probably the most enjoyable few years any of us can remember.
So if 2023 is another of those years, we’ll have a board that is probably closer to the Markus Liebherr variety than the Rupert Lowe. Sport Republic have made a few seismic mistakes in their time, but I honestly can’t see them bailing out on us if we go down.
