What I hope is the club sticks with this long term approach they talk about. They seem to have come into a club that is a skeleton at best. At least now they are trying to drag the club forward in an organised manner rather than having no plan or organisation and buying Grigg etc, just a shame they are having to start from the lowest point in the clubs history, off the pitch as well as on it by the sounds of it. They clearly have a plan and I hope it works. I do worry about the expectations of some of our fans though and already Johnson seems to be disliked by some. This is going to take a lot of effort and change to recover from and we need to be patient.

Interesting that the club are still only just over half way in filling in key positions behind the scenes.
it just shows what a shambles we had become under Stewart Donald, I really can't understand how he has the gall to sit in the directors box and still behave like he's a supporter. The one thing he did not do was support this club, he ran it almost into oblivion. Thank God KLD came along when he did, I hope his long term success is an eternal embarassment to Donald, the ****ing snake.
Agreed. The man tried to run Sunderland as he did Eastleigh. He completely gutted the club but had no intention of rebuilding it, he just left it as a shell and on top of that hired his useless mates in key positions. I don’t think he will show his face at the ground again when supporters are allowed back.

I thought that was an excellent listen. I hope what Speakman had to say allayed the fears of some of those that are sceptical about the new behind the scenes set up. The concepts of club identity and football philosophy that he spoke about relate to the way that major clubs like Ajax and Barcelona operate. Saracens rugby club operate a similar approach. The club will have a clear direction and head coaches and players will be recruited according to their suitability for that direction. We won't lurch from one approach to another as we have done in the past.
I know what you are saying, and I do have a sense of loss in terms of what football used to be like. If we dont adapt though we will never catch up in my opinion, as the saying goes 'change or die'. My big regrest, and this is only personal, is I think there is a tendency to coach kids too much, and not enough kicking about with mates. I think we are losing some of the instinctiveness of the game (and I say this as someone who coaches kids and youth players 4 or 5 times a week)
The attention to detail on the data right through academy level for all positions and therefore how those positions are coached is pretty stunning really.

And the data is only a guide that signposts to players who will fit the system and how we try to play. It will identify players based on things like pace, height, injury records, 1 on 1s won, pass completion, shots on target, headers won, plus anything else you want from a player as a coach. That gives you a shortlist to review. Then the more important bit you can go and watch them. The data just lets you speed up the shortlisting, and be able to ignore the hundreds of agents ringing up offering players. Also nothing to stop Johsnon saying that centre back from Lincoln was great, get him scouted pleased. Best of old and new models really. Of course loads of other clubs doing this already so we will still be competing for the best. But it still feels like an improvement to me on the last few years. Proof will be in the pudding...

Good man! Let us know what you think. Whilst I do think those that say it are right when they say "you can see a good player", I'm impressed with the detail and professionalism we're showing here. It's a different game now to when I was young, physique,power,strength is all important.....players like wee George Herd don't seem to be there any more ( my Dad will be turning in his grave!).And then there's the off field stuff.......it used to be can they cope with a pint or two,the snooker clubs,the betting shops.....now it's dealing with more money than they've ever dreamed of,the social media,the press,the attention,the women who latch onto them.
The data and the stats are an attempt to identify where the problems are as much as the skills.
I think Guardiola is the standard setter in the modern game and I have a friend who is inside at Man C,who tells me Pep has been doing this stuff for years on players. He builds a dossier with all this information and then,and only then,goes to watch them.The data has to trigger the actual viewing.He knows what he's looking for,if he gets the right stats,then he'll take a look.
Thanks for the Man City insight mate. It is encouraging to know we are on the same track. The watching them play bit is still critical. I coached a lad a couple of years ago who had everything in training you could want. However, every so often in a game his head would drop if he was losing his 1 on 1s. I tried all sorts to get that out of him because he was a lovely footballer but he kept doing it and probably missed his chance as a result. You have to see them play to see those things.
I get the 'over-coaching' thing and the PL becoming a bit sterile, but I see players like Foden doing his thing and my faith is restored, it's players like this that become the cream because of all the automatons around them going through the donkey work. I've always liked the players who were a bit different, with a special bit of magic that you can't coach. George Best, maybe Hoddle, Eric Cantona, and my favourite player of modern times Iniesta, without him Messi would have been good, but never great. ( I think he's never been as good since Iniesta moved on)
So I'm all for the science being used to find and develop players, as long as we let the mavericks have their space to flourish as well. Keiron Brady was our example, I think in todays climate of football science, medical care and data, he would have become a legend for Sunderland.
