No one has challenged my point on the name of the damn comp which is called champions lol!!

 

For what it's worth I agree that it's daft calling it champions league when it isn't a league of champions [as in the old format].

What would you call it?

It is PURELY a sop to the leagues who kick up a fuss and resist a european super league concept. Guess what? there has been one for how long? 20+ years?

Its not that I don't agree its silly as a name but i certain disagree that LFC didn't win in 2005 on merit by the rules of the comp. (and by extension lfc have 18 league titles not 0)

 

European elite league would be better, as that at least isn't saying champions!! Lol

 

But we wasn't champions to qualify for it, just like utd and Chelsea wasn't.

Rules of the comp are designed to make money for eufa, nothing more lol.

 

The reason it's not just the champions is that many of them don't make it to the group stages, as some of the lesser nations champions are utter dogshit - like the ones you played last night for example.

There's 3 or 4 teams in the competition from the top leagues to make it a quality tournament and yes of course that's about money, but not only for UEFA for the clubs involved, as the CL has been a gravy train for them for 20 years plus.

No matter what it's called, the winners aren't (always) the best team on the continent, as saint said, it's just a jumped up Euro Super League under a false name.

 

That's contradictory though, as if was a true European league then the winners would be de facto the best team on the continent, but it isn't it's a knockout cup competition so therefore the best side doesn't necessarily always win the thing.

 

So as such they aren't Champions of Europe, they are the winners of the Euro equivalent of the FA Cup.

 

It's not though, as it's not only champions who qualify.

It is a bastardised competition with just enough games to not be a cup but not enough to be a league.

The top leagues would not reduce their top divisions to 18 or 16 to make room for a proper super league and England would not drop cups etc.

Thus to have 20 club leagues you get a group phase where cash is handed out and then a knock out cup where luck and timing have a lot to do with winning it.

 

Not really no, as the seeding in the leagues and then the additional seedings in the knockout draw try to ensure that the best teams get through.

In the FA Cup you could have City vs United in the 3rd round.

 

Why do you think UEFA snuck the Europa league name in.... its a lesser cup with the title of European league.

In effect we have a top division and seconds division in Europe but would need say 24-32 games in a proper league.

Do you want the prem down to 16 teams to make it happen and fa cup down to day European qualified teams coming in at 5th round and no replays etc?

This is why this compromise competition has occured.

Otherwise the 20 big clubs in Europe would leave their domestic leagues and set up their own comp and UEFA could never have that could they?

Well we are actually seeing it in group phase as we had

Barca v juve match day 1
Dortmund v real match day 2.

I think this shows the seedlings currently in place and the amount of groups are serving up some tasty treats.

No it's not an open draw but imo it works well enough.

 

In spite of whatever the ****ing thing is called, we need to knuckle down and take 6 points from the next 2 games against Maribor. That should put us in a good position to go through, with an outside chance of sneaking top spot.
