It's akin to a comment I made to one of my Liverpool supporting colleagues earlier this month. If there is one thing you can criticise Virgil about - as bizarre as it may seem, given that he's a CB - it's that he doesn't score anywhere near the amount he should.

 

Romeu not starting tonight surprised me, especially given no midweek game last week. My conclusion is that Puel put the Arsenal cup game as a bigger priority than tonight, and thus wanted Romeu for that midweek game instead. And I am perfectly happy with that call, if it is the case. We always had a second chance if tonight went wrong, which of course it has. No second chance against Arsenal.

 

I was going to pull a sickie to watch the Everton game, on tonight's showing I think I'll start work early.

 

Just hope we aren't all sick after the match.

 

Don't really know what to say, an absolute shambles performance really.

I think we fan console ourselves that we did look very good a few games ago. Inter away and Hull away I genuinely feel were freak results, completely against the performances.
We will turn it around, I believe.

 

I was suprised too seeing as he's played all the EL games so far.

Also hoping your right and he will play next week. Really big opportunity next week. They won't be at full strength so if we are have a great chance imo.

Rest Virgil & Romeu and I fear they will slice through us like butter.

Would love to make semis. Pretty sure we haven't in my lifetime (though someone may correct me).

Depends how old you are. I think the last time was 1987 and the scousers put us out a year after beating us in the FA cup semi

 

Annoying that the Europa League page lists us as third (despite the BBC trying to make us 2nd on GD), so a draw isn't good enough....we have to win. An outcome that is looking more unlikely by the minute. Saints will have to do the business at home.

Completely agree it was a great few days away and we played well at the San Siro

 

Head to head will be exactly the same so will go to GD.

A score draw means they're head to head is better due to away goals.

 

Yes, on GD. If it's a score draw they go through as we didn't score against them at theirs.

 

It will as it means we go through on goal difference or something ... see Jaidis post a few days ago
But if its 1-1 they go through on away goals in our head to heads

 

Just read the rules, so you are correct 0-0 will make everything level in rules a-e, then under rule f we would go through on GD. So a score draw would put them through. Damn their late winning goal against Milan.

 

We seemed to have a good response after the goal. As the commentators said if we continue we will score. Half time came and we really took our foot of the gas.

My biggest criticism was martina offered little going forward. Even if we had nobody to put a cross onto he should have got to the byline, dragging a defender and putting the ball to the corner of the box. Martina and Redmond did not link up well enough.

May be time to play Charlie and Shane together, 2 strikers with experience and understanding.

 

Before the season started, I knew we might not get out of the groups stage, but I will be very disappointed now as this group was winnable. We dropped points against Milan (who are seriously rubbish) and should have got something against Hapoel in the away game. We have possession and chances...no team should fail to win so many games in Cup and League playing like that. One of our strikers has to start scoring soon...Jay, Shane and Charlie are not useless....they are just playing that way.

 

I feel for jay, but he just looks so rusty and mentally slow. I would consider sending him on 1/2 season loan to a championship team to get game time and hopefully some goals. We just can't afford to keep playing him ATM.

If he was a formerly great CB or keeper who kept leaking goals we would not be playing him in important games in the hope they improve.
