Dave Walker was born on this day in 1941. The Australian driver raced Lotus’s highly unconventional turbine car on his F1 debut at Zandvoort in 1971.

The following year he partnered Emerson Fittipaldi and achieved the dubious distinction of being the only driver who failed to score a point in the year his team mate became world champion. That marked the end of his F1 career.

I've just had a read and I believe that the 'old dogs' and 'intelligence' references allude to a Spanish saying "Perro viejo no late echao", which means, literally, "Old dogs don't bark lying down" but figuratively means old dogs have the brains to act less impetuously.

    Hope that helps ;)

Incidentally, it was nice to see this Spanish article praising Lewis and Fernando equally.

Just reading Anderson's latest article: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/22881935

Just a few paragraphs in and I got to the dreaded: "I have compiled some statistics..."

Love how his list of leading names over the years not only includes the likes of Senna, Clark and Stewart, but also Massa, Webber and Rosberg. <laugh>

Any idea what the last column in the statistics actually is? I think it's an average of FL's, poles and wins, which seems a completely arbitrary statistic to me.

I get the feeling the article was written and then someone pointed out there should be some random league table in it to please the one called Benson.

<laugh> Men like lists. All journalists know this courtesy of Nick Hornby, way back in the day. Nevertheless this is FACT!

Thanks for that, AG. I'm really pleased someone else picked up on this because it seemed to me to have 'passed-by' largely unnoticed.

Again: thanks to you too, BLS. Nice to see such a good little article in the Spanish press. I am going to assume such subtlety was lost on Benson*.

*Caveat: If he's already written about it, I hereby apologise to him in advance and would add that such an article will see him go up in my estimation! However, I think it's unlikely…

Well the cars look nice enough, but if everyone over 6ft tall has to sit in the car like that, it'll be hilarious!

Also, nice to know the BBC know what's going on:

"Sprint king Usain Bolt strolled to victory in the 200m at the Oslo Diamond League - bouncing back from a shock 100m defeat in Rome. The charismatic Jamaican looked relaxed as he arrived in a Formula One car. He would probably fancy his chances of beating the car over 100m"

Those skid marks seem very similar to what happens when you boot it in a road car and you get that flashing light on the dashboard <whistle>

It is heartening to see but maybe not so surprising: Alonso has been complimenting Hamilton in the media for a long time now*; I suppose it was only a matter of time until the partisan Spanish press caught on to that and changed their tune.

A few weeks ago, Lewis appeared on the Graham Norton show with Spain's premier film maker, and a personal hero of mine, Pedro Almodóvar (I couldn't believe my luck to see the two on the same show!). Anyway, GN brought up Spanish antipathy to Lewis and Pedro said, and I'm paraphrasing here: Although people love Alonso and his success, people don't necessarily hate Lewis because many Spanish people feel that maybe Alonso is not such a nice person... He then went on to say that Lewis could have a part in his next film because "You are a very sexy man". It's fair to say that Lewis looked a little shocked <laugh>

    * So, my Cosi-style *: I have a slightly cynical theory on Alonso's fulsome praise for his supposed former nemesis, which is that having got over what must have been a bit of a shock in 2007, it suits him and his ego to big up Lewis as the man who can challenge him purely on talent. Obviously this excludes his other closest rival, Vettel, who has won the last three WDCs straight. My reading of this is that it is simultaneously a taunt to Vettel, an implication that it's Newey's car that won the championships and perhaps, ultimately, an unconscious acknowledgement that Alonso hasn't yet accepted that he may be eclipsed as the great driver of his generation.

This version of things also suits the Spanish media because it casts Alonso, and Lewis, as the genii who find themselves impotent in the face of Newey's designs.

Final, less cynical point: Alonso genuinely rates Lewis's talent as special :emoticon-0115-inlov

Tbh it could just be tyre vibration maybe? But also their launch at the start has gotten pretty good recently, maybe as good as Ferrari now.
