Spare Parts (F1 odds and ends)

Don't think I have seen the footage of that... Couple of years before I started taking an interest in Motorsport. Sounds bloody horrific.

 

Monger can hopefully still look at what happened to Johnny Herbert at Brands Hatch in 1988 and that you can always recover from serious leg injuries.

Herbert's debut for Benetton at Rio in 89 was fairy tale stuff.

Zanardi has also shown what is possible should something even worse happen.

I wish him all the best and hope his injuries are not as bad as what these guys suffered.

 

I fear it might be quite severe, saldy. Poor lad. Hope I'm wrong on that.

 

It was. Poor bugger, starting from the back of the grid in his first race, ploughed straight into pironis stalled Ferrari, then it caught fire. Thankfully they kept the flames away from him, but he had massive injuries.

 

Or Martin Donnelly lying motionless in a heap on the track, that was pretty horrible.

I think you all knew by my reluctance to comment that the injuries were bad.

 

Yeah... I'd just seen this. I'm taking this is official? I wasn't 100% sure.

If so it's heartbreaking for the kid.

 

Given how often these sites seem to be abused, I'm waiting for something official before taking it as genuine.

Awful situation for a young lad. I hope officials next weekend can show some kind of support on the cars for him.

 

Lucky man . Then there was Pironi & Villenueve both 1982 both drove into cars .

 

Hope so. Sounds like he's still in an induced coma too. Hope we've had the worse of the news.

 

Watched Billy's crash live and knew his legs must have been crushed. It was quite shocking. Now I just feel sick hearing the terrible news. He had such ambitions.

 

Soon as I saw both were alive my next thought were of his legs, it sounds a bit nasty butI'm not surprised as I knew they would be a mess, I did hope he'd 'escape' with 'just' badly broken legs. I think his career is probably over, but I do hope he uses Zanardi or Bader as inspiration, wooden legs didn't stop him flying (or try to escape either)

Really hope someone like Zinardi can reach out to this kid as he goes through rehabilitation... it's heartbreaking.

 

I am confident with the medical care and rehabilitation facilities these days that he will be back into some form of motorsport.

 

Zanardi showed how competitve you can be in top line motorsport after an amputation. Billy can still have a future in mototsport but at his age I'm sure he is going to find this so tough, but like Zanardi he could be a real inspiration to others who have suffered the same as him.

hope he and his family can stay strong through this.
