Thanks for that Killer, that info makes the 'fire sale' all the more astonishing.

    What "history" is that, then?

Are you referring to the 2009 season or a "history" stretching back through the 27 years spent operating on a shoestring in the top flight. You know, when we stayed up in our 15,000 stadium and yet were profitable? We "got away" with our "irresponsibility" because, unlike the Skates, we spent our money on a new stadium and an academy, which made us an attractive prospect to a potential buyer. (The same academy which has provided huge sums of money in the latest player sales).

The rabble down the road spent it on huge salaries for ageing players on long contracts, and bought some temporary success.

Yes, we had our crisis, like many clubs over the years- I remember your fun and games in the lower reaches of the league - but to say we have a history of financial irresponsibility is way off!

Indeed it does, but when the club is offered totally inflated sums for players, and those players don't want to stay then it makes more sense to sell I suppose. The only player who was valued correctly was Rickie Lambert and he's wrong side of 30 & going to the club he's supported all his life; the only one who left with class, too.
I personally suspect that's why Schindelin got told "NO" - Spurs weren't willing to play the silly money we've demanded from ManU, Arsenal & Liverpool for the rest of our sales.
Lallana's been replaced by Tadic for less than half the money, Pelle has replaced Lambert (ok, he cost more, but is younger so should have that half a yard more pace that Rickie really needed in the last third of last season) & Ryan Bertrand is an able substitute for nothing with matt targett as back-up both for free to cover for the £27mn Shaw. The only place we actually need cover is Centre back, and there are rumours abound of more incoming signings. There'll be more than enough left to make sure our financial position isn't just stable, but comfortable by the end of the window even with replacements. But the media narrative of "no players left\only kids left" suits me fine - we've not lost a single pre-season game, IMO we'll be clear of any relegation dogfight this season.
