The problem was that he'd been jawing with Barrow all day and the two of them were increasingly engaged in off-the-ball antics. I think that right leg coming up was deliberate, but even if not Bertrand was on the edge of out-of-control if not already over it. His immediate reaction to the whistle didn't help his cause. If that was the first clash between the two players with only 15 minutes gone, maybe can you give him the benefit of the doubt and a yellow. But at that point in the game, it has to be a red card.
What was the reaction about then? Did he see if the player was ok at all? He could have nudged that past Barrow. I think he intended to smash him personally. I'm not giving him the benefit of the doubt as he had the opportunity to beat Barrow to the ball.
Shelvey shouldn't have been allowed to get his shot off. It was an incredible strike but piss poor defending
To me it looks like he went for the ball, not the player, his foot bounced up from the contact on the ball which made it look worse, red was harsh in my opinion.
Worth appealing - From one angle (the ref's) it looked like Bertand had taken off and wrapped his legs around Barrow, (red) from an other it looked like he'd gone over the ball and caught him with a trailing leg. (yellow) Not unlike Bony's sending off at the Liberty. Some tough play but not a dirty game.
Quite a cynical view I think. We are 1-0 down at home after having nearly all the play, the ball is there to be won, and he obviously felt he did, so he was frustrated. It is in the heat of the moment, and I don't think he is that type of player after seeing him play for us this season. He was frustrated, as we all were.
I thought Gomis was excellent today, as a target man. As for us, I've seen us play a whole lot worse than that. But unfortunately we rarely had enough people in the box to take advantage of the numerous times we got down the sides of Swansea, and for most of the game it felt like we were playing with ten men. From open play, I'm not quite sure what JWP really added today. You put a Lampard or an Eriksen in the hole, and we score two or three today. But a club like us doesn't have a Lampard or an Eriksen.
But as soon as he did it, he ran right up to the linesman/Monk and started screaming at them. At that point, any chance he had of escaping with a yellow card evaporated.
Wasn't at the game but made comments on the match thread about barrow diving with some choice language. I would like to apolgise for them as they were in the heat of the moment and I hope the injury isn't too serious.
...did anyone else see / hear the pocket of fans in the Chapel end who suddenly burst into trumpet and song 5 mins before the end? Looked like they were FC Gronnigen supporters by the look of their scarves - it was absolutely surreal! Anyone have any background info?
Yeah, Gomis was catching some stick from the commentators here in the US for looking "static" but I thought he had a pretty good game. He managed to look semi-threatening despite hardly ever getting the ball.
Lost the tennis, lost the cricket and lost the football. Not a great day Having seen the replays I can see why Bertrand got a red. No need to panic though we have Matt Targett. Come on Matt now is your chance!
If Toby is back for the QPR game, I wouldn't actually be surprised to now see us go back to 3-5-2 with Elia playing left wing/left wingback. Even more so with QPR often playing Austin and Zamora up front together at home - Ron has said previously that one reason to play three CBs is to help deal with teams who play two up front.
Yep, you could say in professional football parlance that Bertrand "done a number on him", he went in with excessive force with the intention of hurting the other guy. Probably born out of frustration, but a red card offence nonetheless.
