Dave, I was proud too for staying to watch until the ref blew the final whistle. We had fans leaving 20-30 minutes early (and I don’t blame them having to get home). Saw the players coming over as we were walking down the steps but I couldn’t bring myself to face them or clap them I’m afraid. Fair play to them for facing the fans I guess.
Was a **** walk around the stadium though to get back to the car amongst all the happy clappy soton fans.

Would never dream of clapping them off for that sort of performance but I get why people do and kind of respect their view that it’s more productive than venting. I can’t hate this lot enough to a) stay to see it out when there’s the chance of an earlier train or b) hurl pointless but cathartic abuse because crap as they are they aren’t an unlikeable bunch.

Would often stay to the end of the worst of the Hughes/Redknapp games just to call them ****s but felt quite meh about it all leaving yesterday in comparison. Maybe I’m just getting old.

I felt the need to clap the boys at the end - if only to thank them for not hiding away. Fair dues to Jimmy Dunne - he held up his arms in an apologetic fashion - he was clearly embarrassed and recognised that he'd let us down.

Tonight exposed two of our real frailties:
1. Our team/squad is very young and inexperienced and they are easily exposed by better teams at this level
2. Our squad has no depth which, when we're running with so many injuries, means we can't bolster the team when required.

Take Southampton - they not only have Premiership quality players like Jander, Scienza, Azaz but they also have fantastic depth. They brought on Charles, Stewart and Fellows FFS!! That is a proper squad. Who did we bring on? Esquerdinha, Adamson, Bennie and Morgan - all teenagers with little or no experience!

I think we have to give JS credit for punching above our weight. He has a thin squad and is doing the best he can - even to be in the top half of the league for several weeks feels like a fabulous achievement IMO. Yes, the likes of Saito, Vale, etc aren't on form at the moment (quite the opposite) but this is what we have - a weak squad with players that ordinarily wouldn't make a Championship squad but, due to our budget, we have what we have and they're doing ok - yes, they'll lose a load of games but look at the wins - Cov, Hull - not bad for a sh*t team :)

About JS, I don't think he's a bad manager but I also don't think he's a very good one either. He just makes some mad decisions that make no sense to anyone but himself at times. I feel like he is a bit short sighted. However, he is getting some of the basics right, which is why we are where we are in the league. And, considering how many injuries we have, he is doing better than expected.

He kind of looks simultaneously a bit weak as manager at the same time as embarrassing the last 4 managers by performing better with a threadbare squad.

Our team has a lot of depth, with everyone fit. It wasn't long ago that we were looking at the bench and thinking "blimey, we've got a lot of options on the bench!" But we're down to like 3rd choice in most positions now.

Have to agree with this, but I would also add that this season could be seen as a bedding-in period and getting used to the football played in this league/country. I hope we keep him and see how he performs next season with a healthy squad and a couple of additions and only then we can really judge him.

Btw, you didn't mention Sam Field in this post? :emoticon-0102-bigsm

Positives - Lose one nil or five nil it's only three points dropped ( I know the goal difference incurred, but I don't think it really matters given our league position. ) The killer was that at one nil we were still in the game. The second goal was the killer. You have to defend your goal as if your life depends upon it. We gave them a gift, the defence and goalie were static! Jimmy Dunne and Joe Walsh were culpable. That was the turning point, the saint's fans were frightful and nervous until that went in.
Nicely said, Nines.
Was going to mimic the same comments at the scoreline.
I’m ok with mid table. Safe from adversity from both ends. We beat Hull, we lose here. Even Stephen’s, win some, lose some. Mid-City isn’t so bad.

With 52 goals conceded only Leicester and Sheffield Wednesday have conceded more. We have a fragility that is always there and ultimately catches up with us as it did on Tuesday. All the bottom four clubs have failed to win in their last six games, those above them have all started winning games and closing in on us. Let's hope with our injury situation we can keep some distance between us as there are still 12 games to go...

Whatever happened to the tactic of leaving three up for opposition corners? As far as I'm aware, we only utilised it in the Coventry home game. If you want your goalkeeper to punch or (heaven forbid) catch corners, it's a lot easier for him with a few less bodies to contend with.

There weren't many bodies around him when they scored from 2 foot out on Saturday

Yeah, I thought someone might say that, but he'd have had to knock the fella over to get to the ball. Dunne was as much to blame as Walsh for that one, I reckon.

The point about emptying the penalty area a bit is still valid, I'd say.
