I like to think Selles, as well as a lot of people, was surprised by how negative and deep West Ham played. It was the wrong game for Mara, and because of that, the most-patient-fanbase-in-the-world obviously got on his back straight away and started calling him sh*t, etc. But if you look at Mara's stats this season, he's doing well. Played a total of roughly 900 minutes (so 10 games worth), in all comps, and has 2 goals and 3 assists. To me I like very much what I see with him. Think he 's going to be a quality player some day. But like Tall Paul, he's going to suit certain games over others. Two goals against Man City in about 90 mins of action against them though, is interesting.
Yeah I agree with this. Just one more reason why appointing Nathan Jones ****ed us up completely. Brought in a manager that was a horrific fit for the club - then let him take charge of the transfer window so he could sign dross that can only play hoofball. Hilarious. Sport republic are absolute muppets. The one thing I would say is that Onuachu has a better record at a higher level than Ruben Selles. Jury is still out on both of them.
I find it odd that people expect Tall Paul to become the new Rickie Lambert on the basis of a few pointless cameo appearances, he needs a run of 90 minute games to figure out how to play in the complicated systems being put up at the moment. Get back to the simpler things, a centre forward, two wingers and a sniffer in the box. It used to work.
Exactly my point! Some of the best ever saints performances included strikers which were big lumps that can’t press (Pelle, Lambert, Beattie). You have to play to the players you have available. paul Sulemana Alcaraz Edozie Lavia JWP Has never been tried. Yet this is clearly the most obvious attack to try IMO
Compared to our defenders he is. Totally unmarked for both goals. Amazing how a 6ft 7 in. blond Viking can disappear in the middle of a football pitch. For his second goal, some of the crowd were closer to him than a Saints player. When his first header went wide, JWP was the player trying to mark him.
I wanted to see something like this weeks ago. But too much time has now passed, and I don't expect to us set up like it during any of our remaining games. To a small degree, that's because if it was to work, it leaves us with egg on our face for not trying it earlier. But mainly, it's because Selles has clearly positioned himself to play the style which the players know the best - namely Ralph's style. The problem there though is that Ralph's style basically stopped working in January 2021. We wouldn't be where we are if it was still working. It shouldn't be a shock to anyone, including Selles, that reverting back to it hasn't turned us around.
I was thinking exactly that, its a hilarious suggestion born out of understandable desperation We need a No9 desperately, if any of our midfield were better finishers we wouldn't quite so much, not his fault, but Tall Paul isn't it Doesn't mean trying him v Palace and actully getting some crosses into the area for him won't work mind
I’d say he glides around the pitch, rather than rushes around. It has been pointed out that City lose some of their fluidity when he’s on the pitch, but the goals he gets more than make up for that.
Let's hope he has a major bust up with Pep, we stay up and we sign him. Almost as big a story as Keegan coming here? Ok not going to happen???
I think De Bruyne's comments about Saint's footballing abilities as spot on. We would be a good team if we had someone who could score goals. As I said previously, we can play decent football but the lack of a proven goalscorer will mean that we will get relegated as opposed to fnshing mid-table. Yesterday was quite informative in understanding just how far we are from being Premiership level. We could not live with Man City in the second half although I think we showed how good we can be in the first half. It was a Jeckyl and Hyde performance. I have always loved it when Saints to the likes of Ma n Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool to the sword. We have a track record of being able to beat some of the best teams in the land yet this season has not really given the fans much to cheer. I felt that the Radio Solent commentary yesterday was perhaps too complimentary of Man City. I would concur with the sentimemts of Adam Blackmore and Jo Tessum but how much better would it have been listen to if Saints had put two decent 45 mimutes together to make the visitors work much harder?
Fair enough, I’ve not really paid attention to him. I was wondering if there are any successful PL strikers with his attributes? What teams, what style do they play? It would seem weird for us to buy a player who’s style simply doesn’t exist in the PL.
Of course, why didn't I think of that!! Then I'm a dreamer and just want to lighten up this season in particular. The serious stuff has all gone, months ago.
Saint Osprey I have to say that if he reminds me of anyone, it is Paul Moody back in the bad old days of Ian Branfoot. Like Orsic and Calera-Car, i think he is going to be binned at the end of the season.
I simply haven't seen enough of him in a Saints shirt to form an opinion, I am always willing to give a player the chance to prove himself.
I can agree with your sentiments but I am not convinced that he will get a chance to play. I cannot see himsticking around in the Championship either and envisage him being sold in a summer fire sale.
