Bit of a silver Lining I guess, I know they count in league cup but was unsure for FA, Sigurdsson is one of their best players.

He looked very much like scoring today from about 25 yards, the width of the post from a corker.

Found it confirmed in match report in the Mail...will miss game against Saints. Makes sense as otherwise you'd have to carry it over until the next season's FA Cup when the player might be playing for another club.

You are right Brendy and I am totally wrong!! If the FA Cup winners finish outside the Top 4 they go to the group stages of the Europa League and the runners-up get sweet FA unless they have already qualified for Europe via another route.

One good thing, we can now stop pretending that Corky is England's most complete midfielder on here now, and just realise he's a decent enough midfield cover (just like a succession of first team managers have believed).

You can't judge a player from one game. Cork has played well for us...he isn't a bad player just because of one game when others played badly as well. However, we have moved on again...when we lost players at the beginning of the season, I wanted to keep Cork, but we aren't as desperate now. Nice to keep him, but he won't be a starter much for us.

As others have written, sad loss, but not a season breaker; maybe a good kick up the arse for the Swansea game.

Last time we lost a cup game, we were revitalised. Hope for that again.

Disappointing result and performance all the more so because of results elsewhere.
Fractured rib for Long and Gardos was subbed due to a poor performance according to Ronald.

One positive we can take from this game is that Pelle scored. Should do his confidence good and hopefully he carries it on

Steven Davis also sounds fed up.
Guess we'll just have to concentrate on coming 3rd in the league :)

    Sky saying
    LONG INJURY LEAVES SAINTS SHORT
    Southampton
manager Ronald Koeman admits his side are looking short after Shane Long sustained a rib injury in their FA Cup defeat to Crystal Palace today.
"I spoke to the doctor and he thought he will have fractured one or two ribs and that's very painful," he said.
"It's a pity because we don't have that number of players to go with all the injuries that we have. I don't know (how long he is out). Normally three, four, five weeks."

The FA cup has been more trouble than it's worth what with Wanyama and now Long getting injured. :emoticon-0101-sadsm

And let's be honest, had you said that at the start of the season, you have been laughed out of town. All is well really on the good ship Southampton.

We can put this one down to a bad day at the office (and we were due one) and Palace playing very well. It's ridiculous to scapegoat any single player when the whole team was not at its' best and to suggest that professional footballers were not trying is just ludicrous.
Pards suprised us with his tactics, but I sincerely doubt that he will be as adventurous when they return to SMS in a few weeks time. Cup football is notoriously hard to predict (ask Citeh and Chelsea!) and i'm just glad that this happened today and not a league game.

I've thought the same all along. If you have a deeper squad you can be distracted by the domestic cups. After all the injuries and commitments elsewhere I'm almost glad were out. Now Saints can focus on the run-in to Europe.

Agreed; the cups are great if you have a massive squad, or you're in the squishy middle and have little to play for in the league. Shame to see the path cleared a bit by the other departures from the competition, but I'm okay with having the fewest remaining matches of any of the top four contenders.

Some of our Dutch players just don't get the cup do they. Pelle and Elia (andTadic) looking for protection from the ref that they were really not entitled too. It was a good cup tie and a fair result - just a bad day in the office really with no one shining. Harsh to pick out anyone to blame - particularly Forster as the goals were conceded in midfield. If only we had a schneiderlin and Wanyama in the side!

The change to an apparent 4 4 2 was beginning to rattle Palace at the back until Shane got steamrollered.

He is lightweight and can only deliver from dead balls.
