Or Shane Long, maybe? Don't know why you can put your studs down the back of his leg and just get a dismissive shake of the head in response.
Although in Mr Cs defence all the refs seem to enjoy seeing Shane get battered and then picking him up for any light brush against a defender.
At least he didn't get booked for being fouled in an ungentlemanly as has seemed to have happened before.

Or am I biased? I do :emoticon-0152-heart Shaney

I agree that it could easily have been red and given the Wanyama card probably should have been.

I realize this is cynical but think about the Wanyama incident. We can debate about whether that card should have been red or yellow, but we can probably all agree that-- like Koeman said-- you can't make rash tackles in that situation and give the referee a chance to red card you.

When you are the one who gets fouled, you are on the flip side. You should give the referee every chance to red card your opponent. If Bertrand gets studded he should go down, like Payet did.

Refs are human and they make mistakes. We all sort of accept that with regards to why Wanyama shouldn't have gone for that tackle. But we don't want to accept that when it comes to Payet embellishing or Bertrand not embellishing.

I do think the standard of officiating in PL needs to be improved dramatically. I think it's an awfully difficult job but for how much money is involved in the sport it's crazy that so many games get decided on blown or at least controversial calls.

But it's not going to happen until all matches get reviewed to correct improper decisions, which at least ameliorates the short-term impact. And in the long term, those reviews need to be used as feedback to help refs make future calls, and then FIFA takes a hard look at what training and resources they can provide to improve the situation.

Until that time, it is what it is. Bertrand should dive if he wants that call. Doesn't matter if Clattenburg is the greatest ref in the world or the worst. You give yourself the best odds and don't assume the ref will get it right.

If you are a moral person, you can decide that's not how you want to win. But you're going to pay a price. I feel like that's just the practical reality of it.

    A couple of unrelated comments:
Firstly, maybe football could take a leaf out of Rugby Union's (Law) book, and only allow the captains to talk to the referee - this would stop players surrounding the ref, demanding that decisions be taken. If a RU player who isn't the captain decides to add his comments to any situation, the referee can overturn whatever decision has been made, and award a penalty (aka a free kick) to the opposition. This wouldn't stop incorrect decisions, but it would stop players trying (successfully, in West Ham's case) to influence the referee.

Entirely separately, I've think that become a Southampton football (matchday) junkie, desperate for my next fix, that will give me a rush (of adrenalin, possibly). Almost as soon as Saints get a victory, I immediately look out for our next fixture, and can't wait for the next game to start, or at least to be discussed. I read every comment (on not606, on TV, in newspapers) about Saints, either about the game that has just finished, or the next one. I thought that I was simply generally interested in football, but on the way to Saturday's match I tuned into several radio stations, all of which had a live commentary on one or other game, and realised that I wasn't interested in any of them, other than the possible effect that a result could have on Saints' position in the league table.
My opinion will almost certainly change, if we fail to record a victory next time out, or at least a hard-fought draw.

My wife has tried to point out that 'it is just a game', but I prefer the Bill Shankly viewpoint that football isn't a matter of life and death - It's more important than that.

I suspect that I need professional help, or at least a discussion about Swansea v Saints.

Footballers get the referees they deserve. If footballers weren't a bunch of dirty, cheating, lying, deceiving bastards you wouldn't need a ref at all.
