Mark Dennis was a nutter. Loved him. Didn’t he nut Peter Withe once? I remember Joe Jordan nutting Kevin Moran at The Dell against Manure. I also remember Neil Ruddock running 40 yards to nut a player - the last time he ran anywhere Jimmy Case. Terry Hurlock. Glen Cockerill. We have had some tough ones.
https://www.themag.co.uk/2018/10/th...-all-ahead-of-southampton-v-newcastle-united/ For all straw clutchers out there (and there are enough of us to make a decent hay rick) here is a comparison of Newcastle and Southampton form. We aren't as crap as Newcastle.....hurrah
How soon we forget. Fans objected to our more skilful players being knocked around when we were in League 1 and complained that we weren't being protected enough by officials.
Don’t get me wrong Fran, I don’t really miss the “ale house brawlers”, as Bill Shankly famously dubbed that Saints team of the late 60’s, but you must admit diving makes a complete mockery of honest footballers nowadays. Back in the days of the dark arts, people like Terry Paine suffered an awful lot of foul play without protection, but just got on with it. I seem to recall Paine was ever-present for about 3 and a half seasons in one run, despite being kicked black and blue every game. The modern tendency to make football a completely non-contact sport is just as bad for the game as the thugs of the 60’s and 70’s.
It was probably brought in with the best of intentions because as you said above skilful players like Paine were being kicked out of the the game. But the authorities have allowed players to exploit the situation where the divers benefit and defenders are afraid to tackle. Players like Ronaldo, Neymar and Hazard, are already great players but they are all divers and have used the protection to their advantage, unfairly in my opinion. It turns games into a bit of a joke at times, you only have to look at Neymars antics in the world cup for that.
Agree with all you write here, only thing i would say is that Terry Paine WASNT usually kicked out of the game as he was so skillful and could evade crude tackles most times. I wonder how many of today's superstars could perform at the level Paine used to on a regular basis if they were confronted with the hard tackling defenders he had to contend with ! Many of the gifted players today put me off football tbh with their antics, Messi excepted as he usually gets up and gets on with it. I really wish hard fair tackling was still part of football. You watch the famous tussle between Pele and Moore, could that lad time a tackle and Pele respected him greatly for it, he never rolled around wanting a free kick.
yes but Newcastle lost every single one of the fixtures against the top sides. They also failed to score against Cardiff and they were at home so the stats only prove that Newcastle lost to all the top teams and everyine else they have played
both teams are rubbish. 'castle fans will still travel tho Saints fans will do the same on the reverse fixture both stupid
I was at this one too. Remember it well as it was mid week - we were losing and I was mindful of getting the train back to Bognor Regis. I was tucked away on the lower east up near the Milton - was child season ticket holder mind - bout £100 back then We equaliased late ... and then went on to score 2 more and win 3 -1 I missed my train but was well happy
I remember back when I played football in my youth say 11,12,13 years old even then our manager used to say “ first 5 minutes, half way line , just crunch the opponents best player, you won’t see him again all game”. They were right 8/10 times. I’d never go out my way to injure another player, but leaving one on someone was as tactful then as diving is in the game these days. Players like Alli take the royal piss but hate it when someone puts in a strong tackle.
