My work PC (that I'm on now) still has Windows XP, and Microsoft are withdrawing support for XP in April. Most of the office were given new white boxes about a year ago that have Windows 7 but the white boxes are network-only, have no hard drive, no disc drives etc and my team need to be able to burn DVDs so we have to stick with the XP machines for now. We were promised newer PCs when everyone else got the white boxes but there's no sign of them yet!
Oh, I'm only pulling your leg very hard, Fran. As it happens, for example when mobile phones came in many years ago I so disliked them that I refused to become enthusiastic like one was supposed to. I very reluctantly had a phone because I was asked to, I pretty much always left it switched off, and so never got into all that text messaging. People would remonstrate with me that they could never get hold of me, and that was how I liked it. I found the mobile phone far too intrusive on its own. Then, about 15 years ago I was chatting to a mate at his house and we were talking about those bloody mobile phones and I said I'd never embrace the technology unless they could become as useful one of those [and I pointed at his PC]. He laughed and said it wouldn't happen for donkey's years. I said it might happen sooner than he thought, but I had nothing really to go on, save a techy-nerdy gut feeling. So I've waited and waited and finally I got a Galaxy S2 about 6 months ago. I knew nothing really about Smartphones, but my techy background gave me a leg-up. Within a week or so, a friend said in a group, I can't get this bloody thing to connect. I said, let me have a look and she said, you won't know how to fix it. I said, I don't like them, doesn't mean to say I can't use them**. As it happens, I love Smartphones. They are completely interactive with computers because that is what they are. I still don't like mobile phones. **the familiar line is from Quigley Down Under. On the subject of can't be arsed. 99% of the time, I can't be arsed too. But just occasionally I'll make a tiny effort to type into a search engine [Google..?] how do... and 9 times out of 10 I get an answer I can understand and work with. When I don't even have to get off my backside, I can become slightly more capable. That's got to be worth a little effort. EDIT: Plus, I'd watch it with the can't be arsed attitude. It turns into can't do it after a few years. I know because my extremely techy eldest brother can't understand a tiny thing about today's technology because he couldn't be arsed.
I like google...no more racking your brains for something. Love researching and booking holidays. Like not606 and general football stuff. That's it. Have a camera full of photos and have never looked at them on the PC or printed off any. have tried a friend's e-book....saved me money as I know now that I prefer paper books. I have a simple mobile phone and text sometimes. I use tech stuff when I want to, but it holds little fascination for me.
Absolutely. Technology holds little fascination for me either, just the stuff I can use. I much prefer paper books too even though I have an e-book on the Galaxy. I keep the e-book on board just in case I'm in a situation where I can do nothing else but wait. If anything, the thing that keeps me upto date in user technology is because it used to be my job [a big help] upto a few years ago and because people keep asking me to configure or make techy things work. Plus, I don't say no when they ask.
Wow, somebody in IT resources didn't listen to staff requirements. Mind you, how much do you like WinXP..? There's nothing wrong with it, really.
In truth, you can use pretty much any computer made within the last 10 years and recover your crashed files. Obviously, as you had a Windows Vista PC it is easier if you once again have a WV PC. But only very, very slightly. Inside your PC is a hard disk drive or two if you're lucky. Put very simply indeed**, take that out of your old PC, pop it into your new PC, and hey presto, your old files are back. **yes, I know I over simplified. If you just want to access Not606, try Novatech, buy online and they will deliver. They will sell you a PC without an operating system and you can put Vista on it. They might advise you not to, because Win7 was better, but they'll do it. And they'll only sell you the bit you need, i.e.you can use your old monitor. http://www.novatech.co.uk/pc/home/
XP is probably my favourite version of Windows. Quite sad to see it go. I work for a Council so the IT is generally awful. IT work towards resolving specific problems with no thought as to the consequences. I once logged a call with the IT team because the time on my PC was wrong. Not a big deal but it's nice to have the right time. To fix the problem they deleted my login. I called to see what was going on and was told the call had been closed. I asked why and they said it was because the time on the PC was now correct. Somewhat bemused, I told them the time might be right but I was now totally unable to use the PC and pointed out they'd turned a minor inconvenience into a serious problem. They suggested I log a new call.
Well this has gone a bit O/T. You can't take these moderators anywhere!! Umm what computer does Pellegrini prefer!?
The demise of XP is one of the reasons I was glad to retire as soon as I got the chance. The whole of the NHS will be faced, before next March, not only with having to upgrade every single network PC to Windows 7 (in my Trust alone there are over 1,500) but also practically all the server-client software which will not be compatible with 7. And guess what, not all the new software will be available in time! Planning ahead? You must be joking!
Ahhh ok cool. in that case someone else can do it as i have no idea when it is deemed acceptable to post the match thread. I thought there was a rule that if saints won then the same person does the match thread, if saints lost then it was a free for all and i had no idea what happens when saints drew.
To be honest, your City match thread, although it earned us a point was fairly poor. There was little to no effort made, and whilst it did make me laugh, I feel that if you had put slightly more effort in then we would have take all three points on Saturday. Grade: B-
Very fair summary. B- is still better than my grades at school though, so i will be printing this and will give it to my Mum next time i see her so she can stick it on her fridge.
Sorry for the subject going off-topic pepys. My fault entirely. Saint Kitch, how about we make a rule that if Saints win OR DRAW then the same chappie does the next match thread. Is that ok..? Obviously, it's upto you pepys though. Just a suggestion.
I am happy to go with whatever people want. If i get to continue then i will promise to make more of an effort and might even include some pictures and various different colours. Out of curiousity when is the earliest acceptable time to post a match thread.
Earliest is Wednesday for a Saturday match Tuesday for a Friday match......For a Sunday probably Wednesday also. They are not normally stickied until those days anyway. If you are looking to get it promoted to the news now site it will need a minimum of around 200 words.
Sorry mate...don't mean to be.......just that they prefer threads that are likely to attract discussion. You would be surprised how many new subscribers over the years we have got through the Newsnow site. That is where we get most of our publicity from......200 words is only about 8 lines or so .........
