There's a saying in football that you will rue missed chances and we had at least 4 or 5 in the first half alone. After the half-time cocktails we came out half asleep and the ruing began just 4 minutes into the second period and we never recovered from that morale destroying moment as clearly every City shoulder drooped visibly. Southampton bossed us around during the second 45 minutes and we upped the ante by bring on 2 players right towards the end that have never floated my boat, and the best chance to tie the game up was wasted by Cornick. Overall I was quite impressed by our set-up during the first half but the early goal after the break destroyed all of the good work in the first half and we never truly were in the game from there. Making good decisions at the right time and place is sadly lacking from our play book but hopefully Liam has spotted that negative and can right the ship before the next game which will be a tough one against Norwich.
No shame played very well against a ex premiership team. Clearly played a different game to when Nige was here. But I was impressed by the boys. However one criticism if we had better strikers we would have probably come away with a point or three Defiantly need improvements up front-our Achilles heal this season. Manning let it slip up at the hen chicken striker was a priority goals need improving on. I would say 100% the priority come January.
Liam said in his post match comments that we played really well in the first half but having the right small details and margins correctly handled are the keys to getting wins. His point truly makes the point that we are missing out on putting away the opportunities we create and we are poor at making the right decisions when they really matter, as per the second half where we looked like the City we know only too well. Southampton were always going to be a tough nut to crack and we did more than enough in the first 45 minutes to sew up the game before the half-time whistle but we failed on a bunch of chances that we created with good play.
As you say RR we are desperately in need of a decent goal scorer and the evidence was on show tonight. I thought we were light years ahead of anything I have seen in the last couple of campaigns but after they got their goal we slumped noticeably and the final result was already on the cards. Let's just hope the purse string commander listens to the coach, as I am sure that is his first priority, and if we go down that road then it could boost the other players. The best defence is a good offence.
Saw the highlights Had we taken one of the chances in the first half we might have got something out of the game if we'd gone in at Half Time 1-0 up. Onwards and upwards
