Gotta say saints fans have liked Norwich for a while now (relegation buddies). This thread highlights why, how refreshing to read through a good discussion about our clubs without it descending into a shouting match. Good luck this season guys. I know off topic but how do you guys rate Surman always got a soft spot for him proper southampton lad!

I was at both of those as well Kenny, and had the honour of having none other than one Delia Smith sat about three seats along from me in the upper tier of that rickety old stand they used to have! This was when she was 'just a fan' and at the time I had no idea that she was even that, just recognised her as that cook off the telly. Then a few weeks later she pops up on Fantasy Football League with her Canary scarf on professing her love for us. And the rest, as they say, is history - or should that be HERstory?

My other memory of that day ( for it was a dreadful game) was that it was by far the worst ground I had been too at the time, and I've not been to all that many worse since. Honestly, I have no idea what would have happened if it ever caught on fire, it was made of wood with just a couple of exits for a few thousand of us and a thirty foot drop to the lower tier, it was a potential death-trap if ever I've seen one, and cor blimey missus I've seen a lot. Not had the pleasure of visiting St.Marys yet but perhaps if the fixture list is kind to my schedule I might make the trip this season as it looks a cracker <ok>

Well done Saints, looking forward to renewing our tussles with you next year <cheers>

Back to the OP -Rodriguez. He scored exactly the same goals as Holt did in the Championship 21.If you look at Holt's record in the Premiership he maintained his scoring rate, arguably slightly better taking into account the fact that many of his appearances were as sub.

So you are relying on Rodriguez doing the same at the higher level. He may well do of course but Holt is proven now at that level. On that basis I think seven million is a great shout and Burnley should snap their hand off.Personally I think about half that would be right.

You say he's only worth half of his £7m price tag, but it's not just what he's worth as a player it's what he's worth to Burnley Football Club. If you think about it, these days any striker who is proven in League One (I'm thinking off Rhodes/Bradley Wright-Phillips etc) and above who is guaranteed to get you 20+ goals a season and is of a reasonable age, will not be sold for less than around £4m. Burnley are going to need to replace Jay Rod so at least half the fee will already be taken up on a new striker. They massively lack strength in depth and are building to get promotion; The Championship is renowned for being one of the hardest divisions in world football to get out of (yeah right eh chaps ;) <laugh>) and they NEED quality additions to get them to a stage where they are able to compete - Unfortunately for them they are not exactly loaded and Jay is their best chance of a decent enough income to be able to fund this.

Then you have what he's worth to the buying club - us. Who knows how good he will be? It is a gamble. I'm sure everyone involved in the transfer is aware of that, but at the end of the day he will be our long term replacement for Lambert as well as the lad that can play along side him so we're killing two birds with one stone. He can also play on the wing and that's one of our weakest area's in terms of both quality and quantity. It's also not a knee-jerk reaction, we're not just saying oh let's go and buy Rodriguez, let's go and pay £7m for him waheeeyyy... We've been after him for over a year and we've had scouts at his games all season - the management team obviously think he's worth it and if he's good enough for them then he's good enough for me.

    P.S. I love Norwich.

Hi Lambo, we were discussing the values of the players on one of the other threads and being involved in some of the legal aspects I'll repost here:

So the reported price of £6.8m is, as you have readily admitted, very high- given that Burnley really didn't want to sell and needed the money to reinvest, there is a good comparison with the Carroll saga.

Ultimately, though, the value will not be in question if he scores 10-15 goals next season to keep you up.

I find it odd that no-one has compared this to the Shane Long signing though. Similar sale value, prices, ages and history. He hasn't set the world alight, but eight goals from 30 odd app.s isn't bad and I don't think W Brom are unhappy with the purchase.

when you think that twelve years ago we sold some kid called craig bellamy for £6.5m while we were a mid table championship team, i'd say £7m for rodriguez is about right, maybe even a bit cheap considering similar potential/inflation <ok>

I doubt that the 7m is all at once and I doubt we will pay him excessively either. It's definately a gamble, but we stand to gain a serious asset if it works out. Nicola Cortese is a shrewd businessman and doesn't make decisions to splash the cash lightly.

jay rod is far less risky than rhodes. i have no doubt in my mid that rodriguez will go on to score goals in the top flight on a regular basis but rhodes... not so sure myself, yet the fee's are similar!

League 1 to the PL is a big jump, although Pilkington managed very well. Rhodes has a pretty good all-round game to back him up though if he finds poaching goals hard.
