I was sent the link below and thought I would share. It is written by a Chelsea fan but gives an interesting view on our summer business: http://www.thedaisycutter.co.uk/2014/09/southampton-an-exodus-or-summer-upgrade/?
We may or may not eclipse our 8th place finish from last season, but if we don't I couldn't really care, that's because I feel more in love with Saints than ever before. I'm eternally grateful to Nicola Cortese for his part in our spectacular revival, but there were certain methods of his that never sat well with me. I would hate us to try and emulate the big 6 whose fans are never really happy unless they win at least one trophy a season. I feel that the club has regained its' soul as a community club and is being run by people that understand what us fans expect of it. Any success that we achieve will have been earned the hard way with good scouting, recruitment and coaching. hopefully playing in a style that wins us respect from other clubs and the media.
To an extent, they tried replacing the almost irreplacable with 8 new signings, but you can not play 18 players at the same time. 1 was out all season, a couple were flops and the others were OK at best. Thankfully we were not such a 1 man show and have basically replaced the lost players and added a few to areas that it was obvious we were struggling in like CB and wide players. I for one am 1 happy bunny
I thought it an excellent summing up of Saints summer situation. Time will tell whether the new intake are equal to or better than the leavers. As has been said on paper we look stronger, it will take time I would agree. We only need one or two more of the newbies to hit the ground running and it could indeed be exciting times for Saints fans once again. I just hope we can keep hold of them if they prove to be a success!!
We always have to add 'wait and see' and 'time will tell', but most of us are truly hopeful now...the depression has lifted. I've virtually forgotten the missing players (apart from the occasional wish that one or two could break a leg . That has to be a good thing.
