'As for the Aus$79 million, I did not realise that their currency had become so worthless so quickly. Do their banks all own Greek debt?'

As someone who has a very close relationship with the Australian version on the CSA, I can confirm that it is sterling that is close to worthless !

As for Soumillon, of course changing the whip rules a week before a huge event has to be one of the biggest own goals the industry has ever scored and as others have said the race is now remembered for the jockey and his reaction to losing his fee and not the fantastic performance of his horse.
And as Soumillon has said, it's an embarassment on the UK racing authorities, struggling to disagree with him....

Grizzly, if Aus$79 million equalled £52,000 then there would be 1519 Aussie dollars to one pound sterling, making each one of the blighters worth 0.000658 pence. You would need a wheelbarrow full of them to do the weekly shopping.

Islanderpei, if the owners gave Soumillon a back-hander, they would have to do it out of their own pockets. If they paid him in Euros he might find that by the end of November when the Greeks have defaulted, 50,000 Euros will not be worth much in Belgium or France, assuming that his bank account still exists!
