Might have been different if Bush had told Saddam Hussein that the US would oppose the invasion and support Kuwait. Instead they did the opposite.

"On September 18, 1990, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry published verbatim the transcripts of meetings between Saddam Hussein and high level U.S. officials. Knight-Ridder columnist James McCartney acknowledged that the transcripts were not disputed by the U.S. State Department. U.S. Ambassador April Glaspie informed Hussein that, "We have no opinion on...conflicts like your border disagreement with Kuwait." She reiterated this position several times, and added, "Secretary of State James Baker has directed our official spokesman to emphasize this instruction." A week before Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, Baker's spokesperson, Margaret Tutwiler and Assistant Secretary of State John Kelly both stated publicly that "the United States was not obligated to come to Kuwait's aid if it were attacked." (Santa Barbara News-Press September 24, 1990)

That's right. I'm sure that there would be less conflict if the West could be relied on to intervene. Before the loonies say that the West intervening has caused the conflicts people should realise that the West intervenes when there is conflict. These people wouldn't attack and kill people if they realised that it would be met with force from the West.

Maybe some but I'm certain Argentina wouldn't have invaded the Falklands - for example - if the UK had made their response more obvious.

They go back way further, when Arab Muslim armies invaded and conquered the sovereign territory of the Byzantine and Persian empires, both of which were inhabited by Christians, Jews and Zoroastrians. Of course, you already knew that.

Jesus ****ing Christ. Read my original post. I said that if Israel had a civil war, Syria wouldn't accept Israeli refugees because they don't recognise Israel and refuse admission if you have an Israeli passport. What part of this are you struggling to get through your thick skull? I didn't say refugees from Palestine/Israel; I said 'Israelis' and Palestinians without Israeli citizenship are quite clearly not Israeli.

As for your last point, I really don't give two thirds of a flying **** what happens in Northern Ireland. If Protestants in Northern Ireland are offered citizenship by a republican unified Ireland, it's up to the individual whether or not they accept. I don't live in Ulster, you see, so I really don't care.

The Palestinians lost their land and homes to European Jews and refused to accept the new passport imposed on them by the occupying Israeli government. In your eyes they don't count as refugees. The Arab countries around Israeli accommodated millions of Palestinians forced out of Israel but that doesn't count either. I understand perfectly what you're saying.

No you don't. I recognise them as refugees, as I've repeatedly mentioned in several posts. I recognise them as Palestinian refugees and not Israeli refugees because they don't have Israeli citizenship. It's not my fault you're a ****** who has trouble reading.

So in your eyes you think it's OK if a person walks past a big house with grounds and sees there's a party with a lot of food and drink and decides to climb over the fence and consume the food and drink?

I would hope that if the persons climbing over the wall was your wife and children who were destitute and starving, that the house owner would invite them in through the front door.

That all very nice if it's a woman and a couple of kids, but they call all their friends and family and tell of the free lunch and the next thing you know you have hundreds in your garden looking for something to eat.

The general rule is no politics, no religion, but on occasions there is a significant event that a fair number of people want to discuss. While it's done in a relatively reasonable way, and talking of the specific situation rather than promoting a party line, it is sometimes left to run.

I've learned a fair bit from reading the thread. I'm not convinced anyone ever really changes their mindset because of it though.
