I recently watched the highlights of all 49 games in the invincibles run. What struck me is how few of the players, apart from Pires and Henry, made an "exceptional" contribution. If Fabregas had stayed and we had perhaps avoided one or two FB issues, I don't think we were too far away from trophies this year. I don't think we need 22 players of Henry and Pires class to win. We need 2 or 3 and the rest need to be solid, regular pros, like Gilberto and Edu. Which is just as well because I think that is all we can ever hope to get.
If I was playing for Barnet and was told that Arsenal's manager Dennis Bergkamp wanted to sign me and bring me back home to my boyhood club to play under my boyhood hero, I'd have to seriously consider it!! Add to that, Cesc has spent a third of his life and all of his adult life, in a foreign country and was getting homesick. Then factor in that this boyhood club are currently the best team in the world and are making history with their titles and playing style... A football player's career is relatively short and he wanted to win titles to show for the undoubted quality he has. He could've handled it all better but I still like the guy and can understand why he went.
