<laugh> You’re comparing The Strokes to Lady Day? Fuxakes Luv, have a word with yourself...

That’s like comparing Brendan Rogers to Jurgen Klopp mate.

Not comparing, just saying both great and from completely different generations.

That’s stretching it a bit - Billie Holiday was one of the greatest recording artists of all time. That voice is composed of sweetness and sorrow as deep and as full as the Mississippi River. There’s no comparison with any 21st Century singer that I’ve ever heard.

Like I said I'm not comparing them just pointing out that there's great music in all generations, you pointed at the 70's earlier but you're now praising someone from the 30/40's. Cobain in the 90's brought something different again and there was something beautiful behind that sad facade.

I had my tongue in my cheek when I said the best music was from the 60’s & 70’s (even though it was).

The birth of the recording industry coincided with a time and place in the USA, when influences from around the world came together to create the greatest folk music the world ever had, or ever will hear. That golden era lasted from around 1920 - 1979, although of course some great music continues to be made today.

The era of Jazz, Blues, Rock n Roll, Soul etc. in America is like the golden age of Classical Greek culture around 8th - 5th Century BC. which itself coincided with the development of the alphabet and papyrus. Though much shorter lived because life moves so much faster now.

These things don’t happen too often in human history. If we as a species survive another 1000 years, people will still read Homer and Socrates, and they will still listen to Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra. And Jimi Hendrix. Probably not The Strokes.

I used to have these conversations with someone on the Liverpool board music thread, I'd try and find modern or old music that he hadn't heard and it was like pulling teeth but every now and then I'd find a track that blew him away. He loved his music but was a massive 60's/70's fan like you.

I love that some music lasts and is seen as some kinda great thing but I also love the burnout moments when a band just has a place and time and just gets you and then disappears into nothing. That's also very cool.

I went to see these recently and imo the guy is a genius.

He incorporates a lot of different styles into his music and intentionally avoids becoming too big. They are superb live and play with 2 drummers playing in sync which is something to see.

Adam and the Ants used to do that 2 drummer thing. Could make a skeleton stand up and dance...

Course you don’t need 2 drummers when you’ve got Ginger. Ginger was always at least 5 men at any one time...
