Whilst I'm not bothered the guy retired I was surprised to read one of the comments he made.

"I had a couple of offers to carry on - one from a Premier League team and another from a team who had just been promoted to the Premier League - but I had a foot injury and by the time I'd recovered from that people had already moved on," he said.

I hope to god hes talking about Reading and were not going for players like this!

Just looked on a Reading forum and this is a quote they got:

Campbell has been without a club since being released by Newcastle at the end of the 2010/11 season, but claims he was offered the opportunity to prolong his career.

He has refused to reveal the identity of the interested parties, but admits one of newly-promoted Reading and Southampton were among those to approach him.

"I had a few offers at the beginning of the season," he said.

"They were mostly southern-based. One was a Premiership club who was coming up and another one have actually gone up this year from the Championship.

"I had a foot injury so I couldn't even play football at the time. I wouldn't really have done myself justice or the team that were looking at me, so it was a difficult moment. When my foot was ready and fine, obviously people have moved on."

Can't see it being us to be honest.
 
IF TRUE, I would have thought it was a time when Hooiveld/Fonte were injured and we had a excellent but inexperienced Martin as our only CB, and it would have only been short term to plug the gap and be back up - Nothing more than that
 
There is no way in hell we would have gone for Sol Campbell. Too old and injury prone.
 
Campbell would have something to offer with his height and experience, but would obviously be a bit-part player due to his fitness. Still, he would do a job I suppose.

Yeah he definitely was past it a long time ago, and if he was signed by a Premier League club he definitely would be 4th or 5th choice, but he would still be a decent influence for the younger players, and possibly a future coach. Obviously you wouldn't want to be paying him a typical Premier League salary though.

I wouldn't be that confident about Sol, I think he's followed the money for a large part of his career, not giving a damn who he upsets along the way. Even after draining money from pompey he wanted a big settlement when he left even though they were on their knees. I can't stand him, wouldn't let him near any kids let alone impressionable young footballers! <laugh>
