Campbell told Sky Sports News: "Surprised? Yes, because Nobby [Nolan] is a very popular player up there and has done fantastically for the team, especially when they dropped down, coming up and then securing Premier League status the following year.

"He's the captain as well, so he is the figurehead at Newcastle, so it was a bit strange for him.

"I looked at the situation and it does look a little bit strange, but the business up there is slightly different."

Campbell left Tyneside after deciding against an optional second year at Newcastle and will be a free agent at the end of the month.

The centre-back made just eight appearances last season after being signed by former manager Chris Hughton and was very coy on the subject of leaving the club.

Campbell said: "No comment. The fans are great. It's a fantastic club, it's a massive club and success has definitely eluded them for a long time.

"But they keep faith and they are great fans up there. The support around the north-east is second to none up and down the country.

"It would be nice for them to win something, really."

Dont know about everyone else but he may not have set the world alight and he made a bit of dosh along the way but hes been professional enough during his stay on Tyneside. I think he'd get a polite round of applause from me should he ever show up again at SJP.

Everyone thought it was strange tbh, dropping down a league for a reportedly raise of 5k in wages and leaving a club where he was captain, and had his best Premier league season in his career, scoring 12 goals and helping the team to a comfortable finish.

Nice to see Sol saying some kind words about the club though.

Whilst his time here was somewhat disappointing it's nice to see that he's singled out the fans for praise.

Cheers Sol. How about becoming a defensive coach?

Fair do's Sol, he didn't have a bad word to say when he was here. Didn't do much -- was **** when he did. But never mind. Role as a defensive coach would be good.

He was well past it when he came here. I was at the pre season friendly at Carlisle when I heard the news of his arrrival and found it rather hard to believe. He'd been a great player in his day, but when he came here he was too big and too slow.

Nice of him to speak so well of us though.

Offer coaching positions to Campbell and Kuqi if they don't find new clubs for the 2011/12 season.

Campbell and Kuqi both want to stay on Tyneside and if they aren't wanted in the team they're prepared to take a stewards job with the club.
