If a poster was being as trivial as SB was on this occasion, I doubt anyone of us would be that bothered.

From the content of this thread...... am I to understand that board members read every comment on every thread?

Maybe some people look to be offended.

There are so many things not allowed in England these days. You can't mention immigration, anything to do with gay, anything to do with a single gender or else it's sexist, you can't raise the flag of St. George on your own house or say anything wumming wise on a Southampton website without the natives crying out for a ban. What is this World coming to I ask. I wouldn't expect Portsmouth persons to reciprocate given the number of opposition supporters who post on this site mainly because they aren't so sensitive. I find this Modding bit quite difficult at times on a personal level but with me it's mostly because I can't see what there is to get uptight about whatever anyone posts. If it's not personal and OTT then all the comments are just their opinion which I thought was another thing England was famous for allowing, or not.........a personal opinion is allowed but only when it conforms to the general concensus is perhaps more appropriate nowadays. The secret of not getting banned is not to think outside the box.

I've never understood why we have such affection for St George. It's doubtful that he knew what, or where England was (as it was still part of the Roman Empire), let alone visited here.

I have never got the St George thing either but for whatever reason he is still the normally accepted patron saint of the country and his Standard the flag of choice. I don't actually believe he ever saw a dragon either as I don't believe they ever existed but those stories are what legends are made of. For any Welsh people reading this I hope I haven't burst your bubble and banning orders are sought.

I don't think it's so much that people generally have become so much more sensitive but more that there's a problem with communication that isn't face to face, where you can't see whether someone is smiling/frowning etc and you can't hear their voice and whether it's angry or depressed or laughing. There's what kind of mood the reader is in as well, which can add to the problem. We have to rely on the smilies to help out here. The whole thing about arguing or debating a point of view is that you want to bring others round to your own way of thinking. I wouldn't want to do your modding job for all the tea in China. :p

The whole thing about banter that most people miss is that it's supposed to be, at least a bit, insulting. Although I'd say it should also be funny or amusing, but that's because I like people who make me laugh. We're okay on this board, we've got our gallows humour to keep us warm.

Mostly on the old 606 rather than now I got a load of posts removed by the good old beeb. The level of offence some of them could possibly cause was minimal to say the least but removed they were. This was mainly by people who were challenged and saw this soft approach as a way of winding others up in that they complained and almost without exception the posts were taken off irrespective of the content. I think this still exists to a degree and never was much to do with sensitivity. There is a world of difference between something being deliberately offensive and an obvious wind up or as you put it slightly insulting.

I virtually grew up with "offensive" in that I joined Her Majesties finest as a 16 year old blue eyed blond haired lad. Anyone who ever spent time on a mess deck back in the pre 1970's would know exactly what I mean. The ribbing as it was called was often relentless which these days would be called bullying or something more sinister that was an "ist" of some sort. In those days you took it all and tried to give as much back as you could or else it would get 10 times worse and nobody but nobody would help. By the vast majority it was a wind up only as it was with apprentices etc. The humour was also very very black at times. Ergo I'm not that sensitive to anything anyone has to say and certainly not on a forum. I'm only a Mod because nobody else would volunteer and have to be honest haven't had to do much on our board so far. I would only ever ban somebody from Exeter as they have far too many fingers on each hand and their typing is terrible because of it. Did I mention webbed feet?

I think if we look at the thread title, it's very specific. SB3 has a track record and had more dog's chances than a Labrador. He has always ended up going over the line.
I am all for banter. The only problem is when the intent is not to have a laugh, but to disrupt the board. If a poster came onto the Pompey board, endlessly trolling and then that led to an influx of younger posters who reacted in a very hostile and abusive way to said troll, then the whole character of the board would change.
Obviously, it doesn't help that all mods are officious, power-mad Nazis, deep down;)
