Afternoon BRR - fair comment although I think this season is a real 'crystal ball job'. For the last 2 seasons I forecast relegation (you can well testify) because we 'knew' the Championship and also the lack of nous with the signings we made, and especially the one we didn't make (CHs). If we keep Cunningham, Davies and Baldock and Marvin gets/stays fit then we have a chance. Lose 2 or 3 of this lot and we'll do well to achieve bottom half. Worries me to death that SOD rates Kilkenny.
Almost right BRR it was 2 years before we got promoted we flirted with relegation again the season before we went up we came close to being promoted beating the eventual champions Manchester United home and away finally finishing 5th I seem to remember us being up around the top of the table but I think we had a bad Easter losing at home to Norwich 0-1 amongst other bad results and falling away could be wrong about the dates but I'm 99% certain about the result(I got knocked off my MotorCycle and broke my leg on the way home)Not something you forget.
I was a kid when AD arrived but I seem to remember a season early on where we had to win at Watford on the final day to stay up in Division 2 and we did it 0-2 After that seemed to come better season after better season until we achieved promotion. I still maintain that there was slightly less pressure in those days and managers did have more time. My expectation, with the signings made so far and the squad in general compared to what most of the opposition teams have is still a top 6 finish provided we dont lose any more key players, Albert excepted
I still think it is more a case that S O'D rates the type of footballer Kilkenny is ie someone who can pass the ball and when he is playing well(I have seen him play well a couple of times)He can spray good passes about that is why S O'D wanted Jay because he can do everything Kilkenny can do plus a lot more but unless our defence suddenly becomes rock steady they would struggle to play in the same side unless we went to 3 at the back with Cunningham and Moloney as wingbacks then I suppose you might have them both in the team but I'd rather not have Killa any where near the team unless injuries forced his inclusion.
I think you're trying to justify SoD here Hawky, he rates Kilkenny whether we like it or not he rates him, he has tried in the past to buy him. Me I think he's ****e
His first season we only won one of the first 14 games and approaching the last 4 games of the season we looked to be going to be relegated as we had a poor season and 3 of the Last 4 games were away from home, the game I think you remember was the 4th last game Away to Charlton where we won 2-1 which was the spark that saved the season as we won the next 2 games Preston Home 4-1 and Aston Villa away 4-2 we lost the last game of the season away but it didn't matter we were safe.
Not trying to justify him I can't stand Kilkenny myself either but looking back at S O'D's teams he usually has that type of player in there somewhere. TBH and I am not trying to stir things up I prefered LJ to NK at least he tried.
Ouch ! I remember the match at AG against United, when the Fuzz stopped the notorious United fans from invading the pitch. It was in-vogue behaviour in those days
'the notorious United fans' ???? I thought they were girls. It was the London clubs who caused the biggest trouble in the 70s. They'd invade the East End - West Ham and Spurs in particular and pitch battles seem to go on forever.
They might have been but they still smashed up Coronation Road on the way back to Temple Meads. When we beat them 1-0 at home I was there and John Emmanuel scored from memory. When we won 1-0 at Old Trafford (in injury time from Gillies I think) the ever gracious Tommy Docherty said we were the worst team he'd ever seen.
