He has a realistic ambition to be England manager; I think he needs to step-up in club size to achieve that or do something very special with us.
which bigger club do you suggest? man utd haven't had an english manager for 27 years, arsenal ditto, liverpool since hodgson but otherwise rarely, man city since the money lorry turned up, spurs and everton never win anything, etc.
I may have missed it but is Steve Bruce still negotiating a contact extension? You would have thought an announcement would have been made by now. I guess he's waiting till he gets back from holiday
Can't see him wanting to leave what he is building but do you think Celtic may be sniffing around on this one ?
That's not really a comparison Chazz - the Glazers bought Man U. with a huge amount of borrowed money, they did that and then disappeared into the background allowing Fergie, as you rightly say, to get on with the job - no mention of name/kit/stadium changes, business as usual albeit with a (seemingly manageable) huge debt. I'm afraid Vincent Tan is a far closer comparison to our own good Dr.
Which raise's the Cardiff question, Mr Tan put his money on red, but it will be the supporter's in blue keeping the club alive if they go on the slide down.
No. Steve Clarke looks the fav for the Celtic job now. Stories coming out of Glasgow saying that Roy Keane turned them down as he would have no money to spend and that England GK Forster will be sold this summer. Fair enough if true.
http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/jun/07/steve-bruce-southampton-manager-hull-city?CMP=twt_gu Steve Bruce and Ronald Koeman on Southampton manager shortlist • Hull boss willing to sever ties with club to replace Pochettino • Southampton want to name new manager by end of next week Steve Bruce is on Southampton’s six-man shortlist to take over as their manager after indicating he is willing to sever his ties with Hull City to fill the void left by Mauricio Pochettino taking the Tottenham Hotspur job. Southampton, who have also spoken to Ronald Koeman, want to make an appointment by the end of next week and Bruce has emerged as the English option because of Hull’s considerable improvement under his management. After winning promotion from the Championship, Hull defied their odds as the overwhelming favourites to be relegated last season, as well as reaching the FA Cup final. Bruce regards Southampton as an upgrade, even at a time when the south-coast club is being threatened by an exodus of their best players. However, it is understood he is not the front-runner for the job, with Koeman meeting Southampton officials during the week. Koeman left Feyenoord last month and the 51-year-old appeals to Southampton because of his philosophy of bringing through young players and adopting an attacking playing style. Koeman has won Dutch titles with Ajax and PSV Eindhoven, as well as the Copa del Rey at Valencia, and has also had spells at Benfica and AZ. Koeman wants to work in the Premier League but would also want reassurances over their transfer plans at a time when the team that finished eighth last season is in danger of being dismantled. Rickie Lambert has already joined Liverpool and could soon be followed by Adam Lallana, the subject of a £15m offer, with £10m in potential add-ons. Manchester United are still confident of signing Luke Shaw for around £30m and Dejan Lovren is also interesting interest from Liverpool. Roy Hodgson was asked about Southampton’s situation during a question-and-answer session with England supporters during the team’s training camp in Miami. “If Liverpool are signing all these Southampton players, I have to presume they are signing them to play, not stockpile,” the England manager said. “I’m afraid Southampton have become a victim of their success. I feel sorry for teams when this happens, when the team gets broken up, but it is a fact of life that bigger clubs have more financial power. Life isn’t fair. The good news is Southampton will be very rich. The bad news is that you might have more [Dani] Osvaldos.”
Ye, I'd a done the same. Good for his ego but I reckon he loves it here. In total control of team affairs.
the "prepared to sever ties with club" maybe true but the comment was made a while ago and was a general appraisal of his future ambitions and not in any direct thought to Southampton , which is possibly a relegation rival next season with us anyway if their player exodus happens and they dont recruit well .
Whoever goes will have money to spend. Southampton are wanting to be a forward thinking, youthful, European type club so Koeman / Laudrup or simliar would be a better fit. Bruce is more your working class hero type. As ever, TWAT
Unless talks with Koeman collapse. If that happens you should be very worried. The Guardian is generally a reliable source. I would prefer Koeman (obviously ) but Bruce would not be a bad appointment at all.
Steve Bruce has no need to commit to anything. He knows that Hull City gave him a lifeline, of which he will be grateful and he grabbed it with both hands. Unless backstage things are not harmonious then he knows he rules the roost here. Also those who question his son's place in the squad should remember that it might just be a package which Bruce senior (and family) are completely at ease with. Also if Bruce senior signs a player, no matter who it is, we should all back that player and therefore his judgement. He might not get it right every time but he will most of the time. Even starting a thread like could start off rumblings of discontent and we don't need it.
