One Step Beyond
If you want to be 606's replacement, you cant just go offline for 2 days (although "server too busy" for a few mins is acceptable) where am i supposed to spout meaningful gibberish about toon in the meantime? a not606 rival, that's where <yikes>

I'm assuming here that it wasnt just me it wouldnt let on?

I think the wesite has been the victim of attacks over the last couple of days, always seems to be in the late afternoon, early evening, probably New 606 as they are dead compared to Not 606.

The issue is new606 wants to merge with not606, but they have fallen out over the name, new606 want to call it newnot606 and not606 want to call it notnew606, which makes sense, because at some point it will become not new anymore it will be existing however the domain name existing606 already exists and you can't call it notexisting606 because people will think that well... it doesn't exist.

What are these "attacks", what necessarily happens? Do they try and hack into the system and shut the site down or something?

Essentially hit the servers and take up all the bandwidth so valid traffic can't reach the site.

Very easy to do and many sites have been taken 'hostage' by this means. Not uncommon for some businesses to pay off the service deniers.

That's extremely sad.

When I managed to get on last night to the main page, it said something about being under attack from DDOS and they were working to get it resolves as quickly as possible,

There are some sad Feckers out there

I remember a few years back (2001/2002) therw was a massive spat between the Chinese and the US so Chinese hackers attacked anything with a .com domain.

My clients were being smashed by it and I spent weeks clearing up affected databases and web pages, setting up additional security and changing hosts.

It's puerile but they get a kick out of it.

honestly if there are people attacking the site in the hope that they'll switch to their less successful version they're on a hiding to nothing if the good people of not606 are wise to whats happening. only gonna steel our resolve to not defect if you want my view...and i'm not saying anyone does.

There's been various messages at the top of the page about the DDOS attacks, currently it says:

Server: You may notice the occassional error on the site. Please bear with us while we are making changes to the server to try prevent further DOS attacks and improve performance.

But yeah very petty thing to do, especially to a sports forum...
