To the original post.....nah. Not really. AP came in and did what needed to be done, so cheers for that. I really miss NB as a player, but as a manager he was a little too rookie for me. I don't think playing 1 up front works in the Championship as the defenders are too strong and then whatever happened with the transfer saga, it was silly to say something like "I'm happy with the squad" when we weren't scoring nearly enough goals.
we would have gone down with Phil Brown probably. but sacking any manager with 9 games to go is stupid.
Well Mel lad, some interesting developments of late. Pearson is over-rated and was simply in the right place at the right time and made a shedful of cash out of us. As for Bruce, I think he is around for quite some time; delivering us to promotion is only half the battle, keeping us there and building a winning squad is the other half and that will take more than a year. Can't agree, but I respect your opinion. My opinion is that we should have been in the play-offs and our failure to get there was 100% down to Barmby (and Pearson). I am a little lost at what we saw that gives you the impression Barmby was such a big future managerial star? I understand the loyalty to a Hull lad and excellent player, but when I have read (just this year!) of all the ex-players who we should give jobs to just because they played for us I wonder how long folk would ewxpect us to be in business - -would they be happy to operate the turnstiles and beer pumps? Agreed with the first part and would add man-management and ambition as other ares that are lacking.
Even if Steve Bruce takes us up, I'll always be disappointed that we never got to see Nick's team evolve. And yeah, I'm sorry that Nick isn't part of Hull City anymore. That's a real shame. Always feel more comfortable knowing Adam Pearson is involved in the club. However, while I feel NB was harshly treated, I've no idea what happened with AP so don't feel as strongly. I'm happy to let Ehab show us what he's learnt in the past 18 months. The Steve Bruce decision was a good one. The Proschwitz price wasn't so much! Not getting into the argument about Phil Brown again. Putter65 is right though. Changing a manager was pointless. But we were going down regardless.
Barmby didn't have a bad start, but that run of 1 win in 10/11 we had was worrying. He looked like being a pretty unspectacular manager. Big name though he once was as a player, I very much doubt he'd have had the same pulling power as Bruce when it came to signings. For the first time in years I'm actually looking forward to the start of a season, something that I can confidently say wouldn't have been the case if Barmby had remained. Besides that, I agree with Lloydy that there was clearly so much tension between Nicky and the Allams that it would have been more damaging to keep him in charge than to sack him. As for Pearson, he's a legend to us fans and rightly so, but his 'second coming' seemed to be pretty disastrous. First he appointed Dowie, then he ****ed us off to buy the egg-chasers. I'm indifferent towards his exit.
Come on Erik, you've missed a huge chunk! Then he helped stave off administration by cutting the wage bill, getting rid of players and getting the players to take a wage deferral. Then he brought in Nigel Pearson. Then he helped facilitate the Allams takeover which saved the club. Mistakes were made but "disastrous" is the situation without AP.
This was my problem. Every team pretty much goes on bad runs, it's what you do to change things that show good management and seemingly Nick did nothing different with absolute blind faith that things would come right. That was poor for me.
Im presuming Pearson. I just don't like him or rate him. I don't think he knows anything about football. Sorry.
On the Nigel vs. Nick debate, the reality is neither of them were good enough for us. Which is exactly the problem with AP, he had three attempts to replace a man he should have never sacked and failed on every one of them, all whilst somehow keeping his reputation as a 'football expert'. The Allams (with "no football experience) went ahead and hired Steve f'n Bruce more or less showing that AP was pointless. Hypothetically speaking… if Barmby had gone but AP was still here could anyone see Steve Bruce being our manager? Or would we have employed Scarborough Town's reserve manager because he's "up and coming"? As for his comments today, they're exactly the sort of comments that used to infuriate me when he was here… from his continuous mistreatment of pretty much every player signed by Duffen to him quite obviously pushing his mate Barmby into making comments that lost him his job. He was far more interested in making himself look the good to the fans then he was in Hull City being successful. To his credit, it worked.
My thoughts too, not funny is it anymore. Wish people would respect that not everybody has their head in the clouds. Same old same old. Lets actually see where we are in a few months time.
While I agree with most of what has been said about Adam's second spell at the club, you cannot forget what he did in his first spell here. Think of him what you want but we as City fans owe a lot to him for his 2001-2007 spell here.
I agree Airlie. Also agree that it's a shame Nick wasn't given time to build and that we don't actually know what happened. Bruceys here now and lets back him, can't say I'm a big fan of his but am waiting for him to make us all proud UTT
Do I miss Pearson? Not really, But what concerns me is the amount of money we are currently spending (or rumoured to be spending) It's not a problem if the Allams have it, and If we are gonna be genuine contenders this season. But If the new signings flop then we'll have a high wage bill and unless the Allams have a bottomless pit of cash we will have no way of paying it off. And we could well be in the same place as we were at when we came down from the PL. Say what you like about AP but he rescued us twice. And I believe he would never risk the clubs financial future. Barmby? Not really, He was a local lad, Granted, And he wanted to play football the right way. And I'm sure if we could have afforded him 2 or 3 seasons he would turn into a decent manager. But he was very naive, and far too protective of his own players. And quite often came accross as one of those managers who would 'cut his nose off to spite his face' especially with Stewart when the fans had a dig at him. Unfortunately after a few more months of low scores and struggles NB would have become a villain amongst the fans. It's a shame because he was learning, But Your home town club at this level may not be the easiest of schools. I slated NP as much as the next man, But I do think with him we'd have had a better 2nd half of the season.
