For those special people who have touched you in that special way and are now no more.

    Today's news:

I'm not sure why he had a significant impact on me but I suspect it's because his work cropped up in my life from different sources and in wildly different circumstances, from novels such as Creation and Lincoln inherited from my father, to his involvement with Caligula before it became a porn film, his influence on the Democratic Party back when I had any interest in politics and politicians, or latterly his appearance on Ali G in da USA. None of these individually is justification for any kind of connection, but he just kept cropping up. In a world lost to artifice he always seemed to be real and now he's gone, which makes me a bit sad.

Anyway, I just thought I'd get this forum standard up and running and suggest, as we get closer to the end of the year, it might be expanded to incorporate another forum favourite: the Dead Pool thread...

In the meantime, here's some of Gore Vidal's best quotes, courtesy of the BBC:

The first man on the moon is no more. I never really got why he shunned publicity (these days appearances on chatshows and maintaing a twitter feed would likely be written into his contract), was never sure whether his head was mashed or he was just faintly embarrassed. I never really got the toy tie-in either, or why it didn't have have a pull-string operated talk feature instead of mad arms. Most of all, I'm not sure why the official statement on his death "did not say where Armstrong died."

Conspiracy theories aside, here are some of Armstrong's best-known quotes:

I especially enjoyed the US Presidential election night interview, which I'd not seen before.

As for Armstrong's public reluctance: in fear of such people, I find it easy to empathise; it helped preserve a Dimbleby-like anonynimity as immunisation against Vidalitis.
