RANGERS have this morning secured their sixth new recruit for the 2013/14, with full-back Stevie Smith agreeing to rejoin the club subject to registration.
The 27-year-old has been a free agent since he left MLS side Portland Timbers towards the end of last year.
Indeed, he has spent much of the time since using training facilities at Murray Park and has impressed manager Ally McCoist in that period.
Now he has concluded talks over a two-year deal, which will take effect from September 1 when the club’s transfer embargo comes to an end.
Smith joins goalkeeper Cammy Bell, midfielders Nicky Law and Arnola Peralta and forwards Jon Daly and Nicky Clark as incoming players later this year.
Manager McCoist is optimistic he can add even more new faces to his ever-growing group in the weeks ahead.
Smith came through the youth ranks at Gers and made his professional debut back in November 2004 in a 3-2 win over Hearts.
He went on to make 64 competitive starts for the club in total but had his progress curtailed by a long-standing pelvic problem.
And despite showing real potential which had people touting him for a Scotland call-up at one point, the Bellshill-born defender eventually moved on to Norwich City in 2010.
Smith later turned out for Aberdeen and Preston North End before his switch to America, where he stayed injury-free during his time in Oregon.
Now back to his best, the Murray Park academy product is a good addition to McCoist’s pool for the forthcoming Second Division campaign.
