I remember seeing England had 1300 Uefa standard coaches, Spain had 15,000, Germany 7000, that's all I remember.

Iceland have 850 according to BBC.

This is all part of this belief that if people are good at football they can coach. You will still see it now on forums....he was a great player, let's get him in as our manager. And British players/managers would be insulted if you asked them to get qualifications in the past. This is changing...a few of our players are taking their badges and the Academy lads are taught theory alongside practice. They will come out the other end with qualifications. Britain is just trying to catch up.

Interesting. Ratios of Coach to Pupil would be vague for the home researcher. What is each country's population of children from say 8 to 17 and adults from 18 to say... 40.?

I wonder if coaches abroad get the grief that our coaches do....why would you take the time and money to get badges just to have abuse hurled at you. The only place worse I would imagine is South America....they are a bit prone to waving guns about...don't do that in Purley...yet.

I agree with you. We are probably playing slightly better than the Lippi Italy team that won the World cup in 2006.

So your frustrations are with the past then, not the present or the future?

Comment by Henry [and Kompany, I think] on BBC the other day. They mentioned about one of the many benefits for foreign players and coaches in the UK was that only the media give them a hard time here, if they aren't doing well. In Europe they have to watch themselves because their own supporters are onto them. They will heckle and jeer them, and in some cases verbally and physically abuse them.

Why would a youth coach get abused?

The bit where they won the last four tournaments and probably this one as well :)

Ok seriously, taking this tournament the best thing that has happened tactically in the PL has been (IMO) Pochettino's pressing full backs and midfielders. I'd have plagiarised that, played Walker, Rose (later Shaw) with Dier and tried to stretch the other team's back 7 apart. Or whatever really, my main point is there doesn't seem to have been much attempt to come up with new ideas other than moving Rooney backwards.

Possible that against teams who won't play for a point we could have more success, but we have made it needlessly difficult and thrown away an amazing opportunity to be in the top half of the draw.

Not really about my frustrations - was about whether German fans, given a different historical context, would have given their team more grief for missing chances as compared to England fans.
