Sky's coverage of every sport is far superior to any other channel. ITV is horrific and I sometimes get put off watching sport on there because of the coverage. BBC is ok but you cannot be bias towards a nation on that channel unless your not English then you can openly be bias towards your nation (Football and Rugby). It has become a joke. BBC did a refreshing job on F1 because it was so dire on ITV. I just don't like the fact the after race coverage was less than pre race. Most of the pre race is not necessary and could be on the Friday evening to give a taster of the weekend to come. I just think F1 on sky will have better build up, better post race comments and when you're bored of it you can just change the channel. It's never interrupted by other programmes.
And the races which we're allegedly watching? Or are they just the same and therefore worth no extra cost.
Even if Sky buy F1, the intellectual property rights for car design belong to the individual teams, so even then they won't be able to increase the detail of the technical coverage available. Sky don't dictate football fixtures - in the league everyone plays everyone twice, as before Sky, and the cups are still a lottery, do kick-off times really matter too much, Bernie has been changing F1 start times for most of the last decade anyway, if not before, to suit European audiences. Sky may invest money in the coverage, but I doubt significantly in the sport. They can't sponsor a single team, their coverage would look blatantly biased, so they'd have to sponsor every team equally, and the teams could only really spend this on inflated driver salaries, due to the RRA restricting spending.
I was just wondering, as the other relevant thread has been closed for certain reasons...that it was invaded by a muppet and the topic of football... How will the Practice sessions- Qualifying sessions be arranged between Sky and the BBC? Will the BBC cover any practice sessions or qualifying sessions online of all the races live that have not specifically been handed to them? Would the red button or live sessions not exist for certain races?
My understanding is that the Beeb have full radio rights. Which will suit me just fine: I usually follow practise, but there's rarely much to watch.
They still have practice sessions and qualifying for the ten races they have coverage of and they're still doing the forum. Basically the same as last year but for ten races instead of 18. Info here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/17238688 Probably best reading the link because I'm shattered and might've misread some of it.
And as I thought, they've got full radio rights. "The BBC will be providing live coverage of 10 races in the 2012 Formula 1 season across all its platforms. For the remainder, there will be extended highlights on television and full live coverage on radio and online, including audio commentary." Just wanted to say, great work fixing the thread AG. Us victims of Godwin's Law have to stick together.
Frigging left-wing anti-Sky Socialist Workers' Party propaganda-spewing extremists that you guys are.
Ditto. Good job - thanks. That probably means Andrew Benson and the live (text) coverage, not live video.
I wouldn't call the BBC's Jonathon Pearce unbiased. But I get most of what you say, it is great coverage, but at what cost? Football has got so bad now that taxpayers money for schools and hospitals is being used to instead to help fund Premiership teams.
I'd just like to take this moment, when all the pundits are predicting a "classic" season, to reiterate that I hope whichever BBC executive decided the best way to cut costs was to give up rights to half the races wakes up tomorrow morning with a hundred different varieties of poisonous snakes placed precariously at provocative locations in his underwear.
Alguersuari joins the BBC team as James Allen's co-commentator on 5live. Strange. http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/97863
