Can we have another CLIQUE, this time Puccini lovers, I might have more chance of being in the inner circle!!
I would be very much removed from any clique on this subject! Well, Puccini apart obviously but there's only so many times anyone can listen to madame butterfly
I would imagine most people's musical tastes have become remarkably wide over the years. The only thing I DON'T like is most trad jazz and some country music. My real love is still the old STAX and ATLANTIC recordings, classical and quite a bit of new stuff. There is a fantastic music scene currently in Hertfordshire, just take a look on the 'Lemonrock' website, scores of weekly local venues, mostly free of any entry charge. Even better than visiting the Vic at the moment
I would certainly agree that most people have a much wider taste than when we were 16 or 17. Partly it was to do with group pressure then, some skinheads liked 'hairy' music such as Led Zep and I actually liked things like Desmond Decker and Toots and the Maytals though didn't like to admit it to my mates. Some of the music I liked then I also like now eg. Pink Floyd, CSN, Led Zeppelin, Humble Pie, The Who, Allman Brothers etc. others have become dated. At 15 I thought that Black Sabbath were the greatest, but later realized how musically limited they were/are. By about the late 70s most of the dinosaur rock bands had become little more than posers and when the Pogues came along it really was a breath of fresh air. The beauty of the technology now is that through You Tube I can now discover bands who were around then but I missed at the time. Now I am in love with Gypsy Balkan music....bands like the Barcelona Gypsy Klezmer Orchestra, and Bratsch - I've realised that it is not necessary to 'understand' lyrics, sometimes it's even a distraction. Some interesting answers on here though........we now know that SH. was once a 'Bovver Boy' (as if we didn't know that anyway), Frenchie was already a respectable member of society, Andy, Fez and Dan were all either knee high to grasshoppers or hadn't been born then (1970). SH, BB, Yorkie and myself were all, probably, on the Rookery for Barry Endean's goal against Liverpool - though we didn't recognize each other.
I was certainly in the Rookery for Endean's goal as I was religiously for every other match. I expect most people did daft things in their younger days, I certainly did. I even managed to vote for The Labour Party at the time, how silly was that.!!
You know this talk of diminishing numbers etc? Perhaps we should revive the music thread and I would definitely be up for a film thread. I wonder how the latter could work? OK, it could be just a recommendations thread, but would a film club type thing work where we all try and watch recommended films (from a shortlist) over the period of, say, a month, or maybe take it in turns to recommend a Film of the Week, which others can comment on when seen? Also, given some high-quality TV series in recent years, could we have a TV thread? I've thought of doing this before with the title 'You have been watching...' as per Jimmy Perry (good Watford boy) and David Croft end titles. Thoughts?
i have to almost agree with that. Not so keen on traditional opera though. .... and when I watch questions on quiz shows these days my knowledge of most modern popular music is close to zero
Andy i would def go for a film thread.... as there are some great movies coming out all the time that after not hollywood blockbusters.... Mind you I thoroughly stayed awake for the entire film of Star Wars in full blast gigantic screen Imax this week with my goth nephew and his wife
My neighbour is in a Ska band - Urang Matang - and he's the only skinhead in it, mainly due to his age. But no - you don't have to love Ska - it sounds like Jazz on drugs to me...
You're not missing a great deal when it comes to modern pop music Yorkie. The worst is the 'computerized' beat that most drummers have now - gone are the days when drummers like Keith Moon and John Bonham actually worked up a sweat.
I can relate to the second para.. My mum had the six grandkids round on boxing day (7 up to 19) and I only had anything in common musically with the 19 year old. Happily the Smiths are still a staple of university life
I'm not much of a cinema-goer these days but we are booked for 'Dead Lars' Jaws: The Worst Sty', something, I presume, about a deceased Swedish pig who wasn't houseproud.
To stop those threads being so divisive, we could split them into three - a 'Left' thread, a 'Right' thread and a 'Good guys in the middle' thread. And I suppose we could do the same for music - create threads for 'Good stuff', 'OK stuff' and 'Turn that bloody racket off' stuff.
