Sounds like an old baccy tin to me.
My money's on that being some old bird's brooch from circa 1983.
No way, the only question is whether it's medieval or Roman. It's really chunky which makes me inclined to go with the latter also it came from a field that has turned up 30 Roman coins.
You ever found anything that's ended up in a museum, stoppy?
Yes. I've found three items which are classed as Treasure Trove which go to the coroner for a valuation and then are offered to local museums. Got two of these back but one, a silver and gilt Tudor clothes fastener is now in Epping Forest District Museum. Probably in a drawer. I let them have it for free.
