I agree with your general direction BC Steve...BUT when you look at some of the absolute ****holes who get one...some for just sitting on a "Board" as an extension of their jobs I think Id rather see one go to NQ...It cuts through some of the S Ireland hatred and hes such a good man...genuine dont you feel....?.....Its like the old argument for less wages for footballers...Id rather see some working class kid get the dough....cos the alternative is it ends up in the pockets of Scheisters.....
Chaps you ar welcome to comment but why cause bother, why come onto the Sunderland board and cause an argument, and you know you have, You and many more have left the Newcastle board and the reason many gave is exactly what you are doing now, making comments with one aim, to cause trouble. You go on about ignore buttons but you miss a point, why should we ignore someone who had one aim, to cause trouble, why not just ban you from out board. I have just logged on and read a PM from one of our members, the name is for me to know not you and he has given up, gone, had enough and its this thread that tipped him over the edge. Whatever your opinion its a thread by a Sunderland fan, about a Sunderland hero to be commented on by Sunderland fans. Surely out of respect you should keep your opinions out of it. I think its very nearly time to say off you go Chaps, tell me why I should not.
I am sure chaps can stick up for himself here. But i virtually agreed with him, without saying I did, I just dont think its the right time for Quinn to be knighted at all, basically the same as what chaps said. he gets lambasted because he is a mag, i dont (yet, but still time lol) because I am a Sunderland supporter. Like MM said in the other thread, some read chaps comments and think he is just condescending (sometimes he is) and take a hissy fit because he is a mag. I just dont understand why you would even consider leaving the board over this, or banning him from here. But your choice.
well I can see why he left, was not me BTW but a member, you are a Sunderland supporter giving a view, chaps is a visitor trying to stir, IMO
Yeah i know it wasnt you, but what does it matter what team you support, if you have a view, air it, get it out in the open, christ terry_hardcore hates Quinn, read his posts and he calls him worse than ****e, but he hasnt been banned from here (not that i would want him to be either). A lot of the time its "Oh No its a mag, he must be talking ****" but meh, whatever, if you do ban him i think it will be wrong, but im not going to leave the board because of it.
Shearer would be the first to be knighted for winning relegation, and kicking some body in the head while they were on the floor and unable to defend themselves.
My problem Steve is well summed up in this post, I have to take my fans head off and put my mods head on. Fan me can agree, disagree or simply ignore chaps, my mod head? Chaps can give his view, but he does it in a way that brings a reaction then leads to a problem, reading the comments you can see the problem. We then have a good thread by cuty, a thread started for debate but it quickly goes downhill. One thread, neither here or there but it comes on a day that people are telling me its putting them off.
These are exactly my thoughts. Amazingly we agree. I'm not taking anything away from Quinn either, but I really believe that knighthood should remain extremely prestigious. In the realms of sport, and contributions to sport, Alex Ferguson and Bobby Robson are figureheads of a generation and greatly influenced British sport on the European stage. However, even they, in my view, may have received their knighthoods a bit prematurely. We have to remember that Sir Alex, for example, got his knighthood in 1999, which was before a whole decade of further achievements which would have well and truly justified the knighthood by now. Who's left? I haven't. I've repeatedly stated that I'm staying on both boards. Don't flatter yourself if you think I'm coming back on Not606 just to 'wum'. Why out of respect? Surely I should get a basic level of respect to be able to have an opinion on something. Niall Quinn is not yours. He's a footballing man, a man I actually highly happen to respect, and I have as much a right to have an opinion on him than anyone else. But let's be honest, it's just because I'm a mag, and if I dare speak a word against the almighty Quinn I'm automatically on the attack, when IN FACT, I just don't think that a 45 year old man should receive a knighthood, arguably the most prestigious honour in the world, for helping Sunderland AFC out and doing some charity work. Much in the same way I don't think Shearer would deserve one, even though he's done virtually the same thing. You can ban me if you think my point of view is so flawed that it's clearly intended to be a WUM, or can you see that I might actually have a valid point, albeit one which you may disagree with? Anyway, I've tried to be constructive, which everyone seems to have ignored: And I'm genuinely serious in those thoughts. I'd be happy to see Quinn get an OBE for what he's done, but a knighthood? No. Maybe I'm just too patriotic to see them given away to those who are anything other than major national figures.
OK i am going to get ****ing slated here. Its only gone downhill from the replies by sunderland fans to chappaz comments. Even if i didnt agree with them, he still has every right post them, surely. You banned Oh! Tidus she said no last week for posting a picture, I applaud you for that, that was spot on. But banning someone for having a view which is different to other posters, even if they do support a rival team, is just bollocks tbh. sorry.
Who is Chappaz to begrudge someone being knighted? Someone who most likely will never get anywhere near such an accolade.
not getting slated off me mate and you could well be right, I have read the PM again and it may well be me that is wrong and it may well be the replies that pissed off the poster not Chaps. Its why I ask the question, take on board comments and make me think, BTW getting banned from this board is hard.
Look, I know Quinn is a touchy subject cos you all love the guy so much. Give him freedom of Sunderland, get him an OBE, buy him a drink, do whatever you guys like. I just don't think he's done enough in the world of national sport to receive such a prestigious honour as a knighthood, and perhaps more importantly, I think any attempts to get him such an accolade would be completely futile. It would be far easier focusing on getting him an OBE if you guys are serious about this. Sir Bobby, one of the men probably deserving of a knighthood, had a footballing career 9 years longer than Niall Quinn has even been alive. He also managed the England team for 8 years, managed across Europe and became one of the most respected men in the world of football and perhaps sport itself. Sorry but it's just not in the same league. Not yet, anyway. I don't know the future. If that is SUCH an offensive viewpoint from a mag then I do apologise.
Have to admit, I agree with steve 100%. Although I think Chappaz could have been more constructive in his original post. There really was no need to mention shearer. Chaps, I'm not saying you did that intentionally to WUM, but you must see that it could look that way, especially given the reputation you have on this board?
I asked what Niall Quinn had done which was of such national importance to deserve a knighthood. MONsMush compared Niall Quinn to Bobby Robson, and whilst I respect his opinion entirely, I had to strongly disagree that Quinn's achievements reached anywhere near those of Sir Bobby. As Alan Shearer has a royal honour like Quinn already does, and is also a footballing man in the North East, I felt it was a more appropriate comparison, and wanted to test just how much Sunderland bias was involved in this idea by suggesting that if Quinn got a knighthood, then Shearer would deserve one too, as his contributions to sport and to charity are equal or higher in some respects. I was just playing devil's advocate really in the use of Shearer, as it's important to remove the bias towards any club and really look at the cold hard facts to see if someone is deserving of such a prestigious honour. Was it ever going to go down well? Probably not, but I hoped the point would hit home to some degree.
I suppose you have not heard of the foundation programme he has set up. To be honest, when you look at some of the bankers and politicians who have been knighted, you really could ask what they have done to deserve it . Sir Niall was the first footballer to donate all his testimonial money to hospitals. How many reasons do you need?
The problem width chaps is he come here to wum, then attempt to play the victim and blame everyone else. He then continues to drivel on and totally divert the original OP. his horse is so high he need extendable ladders just to get on it. Then he proceeds to tell people to ignore him but the whole thread I imagine would just read as abuse without knowing why. Chappedarse is clearly in the wrong but as we all know the snake that he is makes it impossible to apologise. Completely irrelevant bellend!
I have heard of it, but thousands of people do charitable causes, and set up foundations, and yes they should be honoured with an MBE or OBE, but a knighthood is really on a whole other level and reserved for those who have literally devoted their entire lives and become truly iconic figures in what they do.
Specifically I think if you look for leadership Quinn and that is often what decides these things Quinn outshines others by miles (Not that its a competition)...It could be argued that foregoing his testimonial cash started a trend and it was to an extent ground breaking Not only that but there is a feeling that his internationalism is a strong facet It could be argued for example that Mike Ashley deserves a Knighthood...!!! Many other powerful executives have achieved this. But Quinn leads in a way that appeals to practically everyone (apart from some it seems like yourself) Any man that naturally chooses to couple Delhi and Sunderland in the way he did deserves consideration Why? Because deep down you and I know he didnt do it for profit...we truly know...dont we? I think Syds dilema is well founded because you sound too comfortable Youre obviously not offensive tho as youve apologised and that is to your credit...Its great youre here... What would you have given for a Quinny not as an asset just to be associated with "The man"...be honest? Pointless to compare with Bobby Robson as it would be to compare with Bruce Forsyth who has waited centuries for his honour and further the ex boss of RSB !!!!
