Did well at a much bigger club , I don't get what you're saying ?

I disagree with both sentiments to be honest.

I don't think Grayson was out of his depth. He did the best job that he could in bad circumstances, and I don't think that there are many who would have done remarkably better. The issue wasn't the manager, it was his resources. With no money he brought in Grabban, McGeady and others. The telling story is this (highly approximated) value from transfermarket which is a guide only:

It tells a story, the only club in the division to have earned more millions than points this season.

As for Leeds being a "much bigger club". No. A relegated club with a variety of international players and 40+ thousand seater stadium outweighs Leeds as it was then. Overall is Leeds bigger than Sunderland? It's highly debateable and you could argue for either, but there's no way in hell that Leeds are a "much bigger club". That's wumming I'm afraid - intentional or otherwise.

See Moyes is up for manager of the month. What was it I said? We've had more than adequate managers, it's the resources and those in charge of dispensing them which is our main problem. All this manager debate is very droll as it matters not. The problem hasn't been with the dug out for the best part of the decade. Nowt's changed, yet we still piss on and on about mangers. We make it easy for Short as half the time we've been moronically calling for heads to role and he's been chopping them on demand. No matter what we say about Short he can always say that most of his decisions were backed by the fans. But we're an arrogant bunch of bastards who won't take any responsibility for our own part. Whether it's demanding managers sacked or turning our home ground from a place feared into a place teams look forward to visiting, we are major players in our own destruction. But, let's squabble about managers. It's frightful the state of SAFC and all involved. .
