Phelan benefitted from the early natural enthusiasm of a team back in the Premier League. A team roundly written off by the press due to the tiny squad. And that galvanised the players because they knew they were in the spotlight and therefore had the opportunity to make themselves into defiant heroes. Add to that the teams City beat were: Leicester at home - A poor team carrying the burden of high expectations. Swansea away - Even poorer than us for most of Phelan's disastrous reign. And Exeter City away - A lower league team we were always favourites to beat. Phelan was lucky to have players with character, but his own woeful lack of ability was soon exposed.
Phelan did do OK and had some luck, especially against Leicester when on another day they would have scored 4 or 5, but do you not think that Marco has us playing better football than we were at the start of the season?
There's no doubt that Phelan's demise was accelerated by the Recaro Boys. The gushing poodles who advocated him after the initial wins were the same furious ones who turned on him. It's what they do. Everyone loves Marco now. But we know what's coming........
Hang on, they were written off by the press because of the small squad. As caretaker, he did a fantastic job with that small squad. Most on here and in national media were calling Allams for allowing the permanent appointment to drag on. Sorry, I feel dirty actually supporting the Allams. I am playing devils advocate here, but just a reminder that it's early doors. Still in the honeymoon period. Hope to god its the real thing and it'll be a long and happy marriage. But just remember we are Hull City, it won't be easy
Quite. Silva would need to win the EPL manager of the month for January, just to equal Phelan's start.
Think we need to see Marco's 3 mates get head hunted by a Championship team to leave him on his own, before we can start to make a level-playing field type comparison.
Phelan had no where near a similar CV to Silva, nor the recruitments Silva has made, nor the results (Phelan beat Swansea and Leicester, Silva has beaten and drawn with United).
phelan is a **** manager and always will be.. whether silva keeps us up in the league is to be known.. i doubt he will.. but don't bring phelan into the same league as silva.. you english dinosaur
I most definitely won't, and neither would anyone else that has more than one brain cell. I can see and appreciate what he's trying to do, as, I'd hope, can most others.
Totally agree. It's really not all about results, even if we lose you can see what he's trying to achieve in completely changing our philosophy. That's going to take time and you really won't see his 'proper' team until after another 2 windows. Let's hope he's here for them.
Leopards can't change their spots. It's a detailed and interesting profile of Marco Silva, which I found illuminating. No HCFC bile from the lass there, but no positivity in there either.
None of us know how this season is going to end (nor where we will go from then on) but I, for one, am fascinated by the unfolding of Silva's philosophy and technique. We are so lucky we dodged a bullet - in that we could have ended up with one of the AllardycePulis/Pardew/Rednapp/Holloway/Warnock 'normality'. To me it's obvious that this guy and his unit are something else. I think that, even if he fails in keeping us up, we will have experienced something which will stay as a talking point for years. Marco Silva and A Grande Fuga
An excellent article. I particularly liked the quote from Andy Robertson "I feel I'm going to improve under Marco Silva and I'm really glad I'm still here". Here's to you Andy Robertson
Totally agree. Again to give Ehab credit were credit is due (not to overlook all the other transgressions) he has said in the past that he wanted a first team coach not a manager (which implied someone who was more involved in tactics and coaching unlike SB seemed to be). Completely puzzled though why he did not go for him in the summer. Always wondered what went on on the training pitch; now we seem to be getting a little more insight with Silva-lots of one on one stuff. Plus love the 7 days a week, deserts off the menu, going to the match together at home on the bus. Would like to see him introduce a no alcohol rule at least a few days before match day. I sure we would all comply if we were getting 45k a week! with the chance to get more as performances improve.
