I've no problem with his reasoning - it's the signing that will likely produce the best profit, plus a good player while we've still got him. Signing of the season isn't the same as player of the season - you can take a long-term view of the signing. That said, it's Dawson or N'Doye for me. And given that Dawson was as close to a sure thing as you can get, I'd say it's N'Doye. We've seen with Hernandez how hard it is to find a striker from abroad who can slip right in and excel, and the fact Brucey did it at such a low price - and the fact Jela has missed so many games - makes N'Doye an excellent and timely buy.
Nobody would be saying Phelan if we'd lost the last 2. If anything, before Palace everyone was moaning that we seemed the only team at the bottom with no fight. You can't have it both ways. I think there's only N'Doye who could be called a successful signing of all those made in the summer and winter windows.
