Yes,but perhaps one of the reasons he doesn't have confidence in us is because we don't have a settled and practiced routine. It's almost like he has half a dozen tactical options running around in his brain, none of which the players are used to or even understand, and he's attempting to find the one which will make the difference. Did the high fliers you saw change their formation and shuffle personnel during the match last night?
Its certainly possible that he's prevaricating and its causing problems. Its difficult to know what's going on behind closed doors. I'd be concerned by any manager who didn't have at least two or three variations in his locker. Funnily enough, the favourites for the title in the same league have struggled this season because a lot have teams have sussed them out- they play one way and one way only (or did until a change of manager earlier in the month). The team last night didn't change their formation, although a couple of the big names (by the standards of the league) did get hauled off because they weren't performing. That was partly because they could only name three subs who last night so didn't have that many options but, like I said, they are considered exceptional in that they don't have to change anything up.
good post marra, agree completely. i think managers are getting too wrapped up in tactics and 'out-thinking' the opposition manager, most see a formation, 3-5-2 or 4-4-2 or whatever i see 11 men on a pitch and my thoughts are that they should know where they are meant to be and what they are meant to do with the ball, ie: pass to a team mate and get the ball in the danger area. i don't think peter reid was the most tactical bloke ever to manage us but he had a team set up just to play football and score goals (or maybe he was and i just could not see it) and i honestly cannot remember him tweaking things game by game or even swapping players around mid game. our lads currently get the ball and spend time looking around trying to find a pass, is this a 'zonal thing' (as i have never understood this zonal marking sh1te either) or are players just not making runs for some other reason?
We don’t know what he told them at half time, but I am fairly certain it wasn’t go out there and batter them lads, put the fear of god in the teams above us.
It was an excellent finish to be fair. But EVERYTHING leading up to it was completely avoidable! And his sub was at the heart of how it started. Not the only one to blame, but he played a ball in a tight area in his own final third. Poor game management from our “captain” and “manager” (head coach or whatever the **** they’re called nowadays!)
Way back, I think Busby or Ferguson then manager of man.u. A cup final I think. At half time Man U being beaten. Apparently at half time manager tells players to forget tactics and just play their natural game, enjoy themselves. 2nd half Man U played great stuff, completely outplayed the opposition with fast, exciting football and won the game. It shows that tactics can nullify the ability of even very good players.
If there are plans to sack LJ it is better do it before the transfer window. Letting him bring in his own players (assuming he has significant input on selection) will hamstring the new manager.
Personally , I thought it was rank bad defending. Balls into the box yet again not being attacked or closed down..
sandy, you will probably remember as well as i do that we were told that the reason england did not win trophies was due to our inferior facilities and training grounds/methods, then that there were 'too many' overseas players despite the 3 man rule in place at the time, then that we played too many games in a season, then the reason was that an england manager did not get enough time to work with his players, hence the now seemingly endless international breaks. i believe all of the above were sorted and we also had an influx of foreign managers within the game, new academies sprouting up and maybe, just maybe it is all just starting to show in englands recent performances but it has taken a while...my own personal view has always been that we take a player with some natural ability, then coach him to play a certain way which inhibits his style (probably the best most recent example is rooney, burst onto the scene and nothing fazed him but he was coached to reign in his natural style and once he lost that 'agressive' side he became less effective) and i feel they should basically be left to develop that freedom of play rather than being stifled and as i said earlier i am starting to think that football is getting too bogged down with tactics and data, apparently our 'data' showed a marked improvement in the team playing ipswich, if so then it was not noticable during the actual game.
Think you’re agreeing with me there mate. Everything which led up to the shot could’ve (and should’ve) been avoided. The shot was a very good hit. Good finish. But he certainly shouldn’t have got the ball and should’ve been better defended when he did
I don't think so...Its been the defending of situations for over a months and a half that concerns me. The boy should never have had the opportunity in the first place.
Erm… that’s basically what I said. Not about the month and a half (as I was singling out this goal) but I agree and have said the same for quite some time.
I've not seen the data, but I think we were probably better than against Shef Wed. But if that's how they are spinning it then God help us.
