An interesting point but which came first the chicken or the egg. The club has to do what it thinks best for its investors . BUT if the fans are not happy they will let you know and you should ignore them at your peril. Arsenal fans are no where near to the shocking situation at Chelsea where the fans howl and boo everytime they see Benitez . But they are the ones who shell out the high cost of season tickets and you should at least acknowledge that they are important. A lot of fans dont feel they are being taken notice of AT ALL by the club. Long term , thats not good for business either . Its a conundrum The opinion of many is that he has EARNED to right to at least see out his contract and not get the elbow. I dont think he should be kicked out on his ass, just gently encouraged to reconsider his future. While he is still thought of (moderately ) kindly.
Wenger's going nowhere at least until his contract is upand the board aren't going to sack him, so this thread is a bit pointless. Better to get behind the team and the manager and support them until the end of the season, then see what we do in the summer. That's when the real questions need to be answered.
This question keeps coming up, and we never hear who exactly is going to replace Wenger. Every time it is assumed that someone fantastic is going to take over, but when you get rid of a manager history shows that it is usually a worst case scenario. Very rarely does a team get a manager that is exactly who they want. So when you consider this question, I would go with a middle of the road manager. Stop thinking one of the top 4 or 5 managers in the world will come to Arsenal. The chance of failure is huge. They will be expected to win trophies with significantly less money available than the 3 top clubs in the league. Top 4 will be an absolute minumum, a given. None of the top 20 managers in the world are going to want to have anything to do with that, and very few of the up and comers are either. So start looking at the Martin Jols and the Harry Redknapps, because the top guys are going to go for PSG etc where they can win easily. Not only that, but Real Madrid, Chelsea and probably Man City, maybe even Man United will also be looking for a new manager in the summer. We are dropping down the list. Now, how many people want Wenger to leave?
I do, I want him out, now. Manunited aren't going for any new coach. Chelsea are most likely getting Pellegrini, and 'probably' Mancity doesn't mean Arsenal should rule out looking for another coach. 3 coaches on my list would be: -Mourinho -Moyes -Anchelotti
You keep saying no-one can replace him Toledo, but there's an entire thread on it lower down on this board with pages of suggestions. De Boer is my choice. There's plenty of others. Wenger is not irreplaceable. In fact, he's the source of a lot of the problems at the moment, including the current predicament of not being in the Top4 - the minimum required, which is now both unlikely, and the maximum attainable. Also, this thread is not pointless. It's gauging the opinion of the board & asking how the fans feel. If this is pointless then almost all of the threads ever posted here are pointless. It's a forum for debate, the thread poses a question for fans to debate.
De Boer and Klopp have made it clear their staying put for the foreseeable so think you can rule them out. You should go for Laudrup.
He won't be leaving now, when Wenger's contract is up and he steps down then it'd be the perfect time to get him.
Moyes is the only name that is in the right ball park. If anyone is dumb enough to think that Mourinho is a) Going to come to Arsenal. b) going to be any good when he isn't managing the richest club in the country, then I really can't debate with you. Moyes hasn't won anything, has generally spent more money net than Wenger and (when he started) was at a very similar club, only slightly smaller, and with a very similar structure. After 12 years Arsenal are where we are and Everton are where they are. If you think Moyes has done a better job then I cant help you. De Boer is not going to come to Arsenal. Why would he? If he finishes 4th here, doing as good a job managing Arsenal, as the Man Utd, Chelsea and Man City managers do their clubs, he will finish 4th which is the absolute bare minimum and even if he does that every year, he will be considered a failure. Why would he take a job where, if he manages as well as, or only slightly better than, 3 of the other top managers in the world, who also have an advantage in resources, he will be considered a failure? Why would anyone take the job; they are almost guaranteed to fail?
Your signature reminded me that something similar happened at Spurs when Nicholson seemed to run out of steam. But replacing him didn't really work well. I actually think Arsenal have a big problem now. Keeping Wenger or replacing him will both likely lead to further decline.
There's no way I'd want Moyes to replace Wenger, that would be a step backwards in my opinion. Moyes is a better version of MON and that's about it. He's done well with Everton, but I'm not sure he'd make the step up to a big club and I don't think he'd be able to achieve more at Arsenal than Wenger has. Whilst this is not a very popular opinion at the moment, it is my opinion that Wenger is NOT the problem at Arsenal. The problem has come about by the board's insistence on selling our best players and not replacing them with equally as good ones. Over a few seasons the quality of our squad has gone down to where we are now left with a handful of top quality players, not a team full of top quality players. I think there is an obvious blind spot with Wenger when it comes to defending and he's always relied on quality attacking players to surpass that problem, but at the moment, we don't have that. I read on a blog earlier that Hill-Wood and Kronke in their desperation to keep Red and White holdings out of the club, refused to budge on a mooted 5%-7% share sale, which could have raised £75m for potential transfers - at a time when Fabregas, Nasri and RVP were all at the club. It's speculative, but had we been able to invest properly, then those players might still be with us. Anyway for me Wenger, whilst not perfect is not the problem. I still maintain that it's because of him, not despite him that we are finishing in the top 4. Given the changing landscape of the Premier League over the last 8 years, coupled with our financial restrictions, it's a minor miracle that he's managed to keep us in the champions league every season. This summer is the Litmus test for this board, because they have been promising proper investment in this squad for a few years now and we are at a point where it could be make or break for a number of years ahead. I want Wenger to be given the cash to properly rebuild this team, because his track record in bringing quality players to this club when he has the funds available is second to none.
