Football's lawmakers have agreed to test kick-ins as a replacement for throw-ins to speed up the game.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino announced the rule change would be tested following discussions at the 136th Annual General Meeting of the International Football Association Board, today.

Infantino said proposals were in place to test kick ins, first suggested in a raft of potential reforms put forward by Arsene Wenger in 2020.

I almost took that the wrong way. Thought you were criticising Trent's throw-in ability (which is very good imo) but realised you were meaning it would give him more dead balls to deliver.

Ridiculous. Just means teams will lump it clear or effectively take a free kick anywhere near in opposition half.

Now I wouldn’t mind getting rid of foul throw and letting people throw it in underarm, means can get the ball on the ground and can take quick throws by just picking it up and rolling it.

Other suggestion being considered is a countdown clock which stops every time the ball is dead so that at least 60 minutes the ball is in play. Would cut out some time wasting I suppose.

It says the idea is to speed up the game. If we get all the set-piece palaver going on every time the ball goes out it'll just make the game even longer.
I imagine it means you can just quickly kick the ball back onto the pitch.
Personally, I wish they'd quit pissing about with the rules, and stop trying to make the game "better".

Seems like changing the game for the sake of changing it. I don't much see the point. Throw ins are a fundamental part of the game and experience.

You could replace them with kickins but I don't see that making the game any better. It will just make it a different game.

No it makes no sense.

Everyone will stop and make a big set up to take a free.

Refs will have to let lads either stand right at the line as rules are now or take 10 yards back to set up what is in effect a free kick.

This will kill any sense of speed to the game.

The difference between a free for a foul and a ball just running out of play is massive. This in effect makes every throw in the attacking third a chance of a goal. That sounds nice but by the time the big cbs trundle up and it gets fussed over you've lost 2 mins.

Any change should be to speed the game up not slow it down.

I like this. Speed the game up. Stop the time-wasting looking for ball and walking 20 uards up a line etc.

Just wave who has the throw in and lob it on. If someone wants their keeper to come throw it into the opposition Box then book them for time eadting etc.

That all sounds like double dutch football to me.

With unlimited subs, I'm assuming they can't bring someone back on if they've taken them off.... Otherwise it will end up like American sports where they're not stop changing the team every few minutes.

The only "major rule" that Is mess with would be what to do if a cup game ends in a tie.

I know we've seen attempts to fix this before but it always goes back to extra time and penalties. I've always like the idea of golden goal combined with removing two players from each side every five mins until someone scores...

I knind of like the yank run for half way with ball at keeper and score or not.

120mins should be killing sides but Egypt proved again a really negative bus parking side can get to finals doing it.

I'd be all for an 8 a side out of the non playing subs or whatever.

Yeah thats pretty similar

Obviously 1 doesn't apply to hockey as we can't kick it anyway and sidelines have always been on the floor put ins.

2. Yes this came in to Hockey about 5 years ago, we call it a self-take. Works well in Hockey as we're a very fast game anyway, also its much harder for us to sling a ball from one end of the pitch to another in one go.

3. Again we've always had sin-bins. But we also have a 3 card system. Green 2min Sin bin, Yellow 5-15min sin bin, Red OFF and some kind of games ban.

4. Yep, always has been. This works really well for us. Again we're a faster game than football and frankly hockey is knackering, also great for amateur as it means you're not turning up to just play the last 10mins.

5. This is more international. They have a stop clock, which is stopped for the longer breaks in play, penalty corners etc.
However the clock is not stopped for sidelines, as the ball returns to play fast in general after all we're inside a cage or contained pitch. Also not stopped for subs as they are more like Ice Hockey, players pop on and off.
Generally games are 35min halves, international are 15min quarters (but with only 1 half time change of ends)

I think it's a bit unnecessary really with 3 sub allowed. Just ban subs within 5.mintues of end of game barring real.injury so ref can have time to add on proper time and stop watch for the long walk off.

All these efforts are aimed at stopping break up of flow of games bit the reality is of one side wants to break the flow they will find a way to achieve it.

It's about honesty in the end and you get nothing for honesty in the game. Look at Everton disgracefulnshow at anfield. Ref should have had 3 sent off if honesty was important
