Yes, but were given opportunities in their home countries: EPL has the largest numbers of foreign players in Europe. Charity begins at home.
Yeah I know he didn't actually say it - it was a joke made by one of his team mates Rush said - it seemed to fit in my last post though
If I struggled to find a job, I would go and travel to find one. I used to live in Derby but moved to London for a job. Footballers can do the same, including travelling abroad and pursuing new opportunities.
I think the thing that stands out is that it was said at all. It summed up then, as it does now, what players [and some of us] think about working abroad. A little hint of 'they're' different from us - nothing to do with the job you're actually doing being the same, but the place you're doing it in not being quite comfortable and you somehow don't fit in. Foreign players coming here don't seem to have the same hang-ups about not fitting in [with a few exceptions].
I've spoken with friends about this on many occasions. If I had the opportunity to play footy as a career and was playing mid table Championship then I would certainly look for opportunities abroad, the lifestyle and of course the weather would appeal to me for a start. The wages may well be a problem with the Championship paying better wages than some Italian and Spanish premier league teams but to me the opportunity to play in another country would be the driving factor.
If young players move abroad they can always look to return to this country further down the line. If some one like Callum McManaman went to play in Spain for a bit they could really learn some thing extra.
