I think it's the way you put thing's that made people think you didn't give a ****.
It clearly aint the case and im sorry for thinking that <ok>.
People were not just moaning about the England team not being able to wear them as such, it's more the fact how easy fifa turned down the symbol of rememberance.
They have now relented and that should be the end of the matter.

Just seems like the FA want to make Fifa look bad (it's not difficult) for no real reason. Sour grapes from the FA for not giving us the World Cup really.

FIFA is massively corrupt and should be made to look bad. Unless we're constantly putting pressure on them to kick out all the corrupting influences and completely reform the organisation, nothing will change. As for the World Cup thing, Russia and Qatar were the least prepared and, to be honest, are two of the most likely countries to be handing out bribes.

Well I certainly agree with you on that point Joe <ok>

And my apologies for misunderstanding your views on the remembrance issue. I think we should all respect each other's beliefs or non-beliefs and move on about that now, yes?

The time could come when the single symbol of the Red Poppy might be slightly more important to you. I'll admit, I don't tend to wear one, but I understand the significance. Sure, we shouldn't need the symbol to get us to remember, but it's a focus. Societies like to compartmentalise their institutions, and Remembrance Day is just another. It has to be this way, otherwise it would be quietly forgotten. The open public display nowadays is a bit of a backlash against the 1970-80s when less attention was paid. Back then there was talk of the Poppy being dropped, but the general public made their feelings known. So, although we all privately have our own grief and memories, this is the day where we are united by it.

Unless societies have matured enough in the future, we'll still need symbols to help us remember not to commit violence, or to go to war. it will be in those times that the lessons of the past will in most danger of being forgotten. The Poppy has a place because humans are fallible.

The debate has moved on a lot further than the thread was originally intended to.

There are understandably, some very strong feelings on the subject to which the discussion has reached, but I think the original question has been answered.

Not wishing to see a heated debate spill over into Armistice Day itself, I think it's right and proper to close this one forthwith.

Thank-you for all your comments. <peacedove>
